vac locks (or lack thereof)

well anyway i have a 76 300d. of course the vac locks dont work, want to get working at some point, butttt i have a question

i was under the assumption that none of the locks work. welll today when i unlocked my drivers door, i just happened to look back, and slowly but surely, both back locks came up (about 30 secs) however, the passenger front lock doesnt move (very had to pull and push down. weirdest thing though went to lock the drivers door, and wouldnt budge, then i figured id lock the back-- well same thing woudlnt budge, after working with the back right lock, it finally went back down, and then the others went down as well.

what the heck is going on here? help plz.

Vac Locks

i HAD A SIMILAR PROB. i PULLED ALLM 4 DOOR PANELS OFF TO SEE IF ANY DIAPHRAGMS CRACKED AND LO AND HOLD THE LAST DOOR I CHECKED HAD 2 CRACKED DIAPHRAMS. I CHANGED THEM OUT AND THEY ALL WORK GREAT. IF THEY WERE NOT CRACKED I SPRAYED THEM WITH A RUBBER TREATMENT AND CLEANED EACH ONE SO I MIGHT NOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN SOON. RAY M

I would either call Phil (I don't think there is much of a vac selection unless by special order), or checkout *************** (good selection).

Take a look at the Vacuum Door Lock diagram I sent you and you will see that you should be able to do basic vacuum pump tests [without removing the door panels] on each of the 2 vacuum actuator diaphragms on the right side and the rear one on the left side. My color diagram also has graphics of these vacuum actuators which have 2 diaphrams each. The graphic shown at: http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/Drawings.aspx?bmid=132 [poor because it's partial and thus misleading] also gives a depiction of what they look like. Here they are called "Door Lock Diaphragm" but can go by other names but usually searching on "vacuum" will find them... and a not-too-good close-up graphic of one can be seen at: http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/productpage.aspx?pid=102038

Although not as likely to fail, the key switch vacuum control in the driver's door can also be checked without removing the door IF you treat it for what it is... only a switch.

Having said the above, I recommend you learn how to remove the panels so you can do a general check and cleaning of rubber diaprhragms and connectors inside these doors as well as cleaning and lubricating of mechanical joints and slides using a DRY silicone or "Teflon" type spray lubricant. Such "PM" is probably long overdue on most of these vintage vehicles. When I went throught testing these vacuum actuators in the doors, on the fuel door and trunk, I found two that needed replacement. Some failures can be repaired but so lone as their co$t is not too prohibitive, I think most of us will opt to replace such parts. I did use a non-hardening silicone sealer to repair the rubber grommet where the hard plastic line goes into the vacuum reservoir [ a note on the vacuum diagram I sent ya].

You can find the supply tank through an access panel at the driver's side front wheel well.
