There was a BMW 524TD. Only 4-door, 1984/85 and they are as rare as hens teeth.
http://www.7-forum.com/news/news2004...p0014118-c.jpg BMW 524td: The Diesel Revolution. A revolutionary decision in the history of BMW was to penetrate the highly competitive market for diesel automobiles and thus develop a new generation of engines. Finally, in June 1983, the BMW 524td was presented in Europe (1985 in the US). BMW had faced up to the challenge of constructing a diesel engine which was to unite the benefits of the diesel principle with characteristic BMW qualities such as dynamic performance and running smoothness. Thus the BMW turbodiesel engine was created on the basis of the existing in-line 6-cylinder engines between 2 and 2.7 liters capacity. With turbocharging and large flow cross sections in the intake and outlet valves of the 2.4-liter engine; a high output of 115 horsepower was enabled. The further developed swirl chamber combustion process also offered excellent conditions for low fuel consumption and combustion noise. According to DIN norms, BMW achieved a fuel consumption of just 33.1 mpg with this modern turbodiesel. With a top speed of 112 mph and an acceleration of 13.5 seconds from 0 - 62 mph, driving performance figures were realized which set new standards in dynamic performance for diesel automobiles. |
i was actually behind one of those a couple of weeks ago. i saw 'td' on the decklid badge and thought it was a fake (ie those super-rare 'm7's you see everywhere in boston ) i've been looking for info on them but have been unsuccessful. how much would one go for these days?

correct. diesel coupe would have to be 300cd i think also.
a beemer diesel can be bought for half to a third of a comparable condition mb diesel. when new i drove one. it was reasonably quick and handled like a beemer....great. but they arent made as well as a benz in any way. tom w |
Still, 115hp from a 2.4L I-6? Even the turbo OM616 in india only makes 90.

It could be a conversion
Its is possible to convert a 500 SEC to a diesel pretty easily.
I converted my 1985 500 SEL to a 1985 300 SDL, by putting in a 300 SD engine and transmission, Im also planning to make a 300 SDC, out of an SEC with a bad engine, Someone else might have done the same thing that Im planning with this coupe and left the 500 series badgeing. |
No, 500SEC maybe?

A diesel in a C126 would be a bit of a let down. They are a GT, much more suited to an M117.

Diesel SEC would be an unique

Im going to swap in 617 turbo into either a W126 SEC or w124 CE, I really want a diesel coupe, and I have looked at some 1985 CD's and I dont like them as much. With some mods a 617, can be made reasonably quick, and relativly quite and smooth. I have had excellent fuel economy with my 85 SDL, and it has been extreemly reliable, Once I find the right SEC or CE, ill post pics of the swap |
I've thought about this many times too, came close a few times but it always fell through. My engine of choice would have to be a 603 though- I've been spoiled and can't go back :D
I seem recall seeing before now too that the Finns had a C124 with a 606, right? |
If I were going to drop an engine into anything but a W123, it would have to be a 603 or 606. The 617 is too rough and airflow choked (by it's uniflow head design) for a SEC, SL, or CE.
In any case, a stock W124/W126 with an OM603 can whoop most any modded W123/W126 with an OM617 in everything but simplicity. |
