Which MityVac to buy??
I am going to purchase a MityVac to test the vacuum system in my '84 300 Turbodiesel. I have seen a listing for a test kit and and another that seems to be a combination vacuum test kit and brake bleeding tool. I have not seen them listed side by side so cannot tell which is the one I should purchase. Any advise from an experienced user. It seems like the going price is $65.

I bought this one a year and a half ago and it works great. It comes in a case, and has all the attachments you will need.

Don't know all the different versions, but I purchased one that does vacuum testing and brake bleeding at AutoZone for $30. They call it a brake bleeder and it has the Mity Vac name right on it.
This is one of those tools that you just can't get away without when it comes to working on an older Mercedes. I also use it to bleed home heating oil lines. It is the same one that Biodiesel300TD bought.

You want the MityVac that does pressure AND vacuum, and that has the metal-body pump. The Silverline 4050 kit is the hot ticket:

Harbor freight has an all-metal vac tester for like $16, half the price of the "mityvac" brand one. We got the metal one, works great and its built very very well! Certainly better than some plastic job.

The HF item linked above has a plastic body. The Mity-Vac 4050 kit has a metal body. The plastic ones are junk... I had one and eventually it broke. I replaced it with the 4050 kit - much nicer. The fact that it produces pressure is useful for testing ALDA leakdown, and I also use it for a boost pressure tester as well.

I, too have the Harbor Freight model. Still works fine, even after getting brake fluid all inside it. I think if you are buying it to work on your own car, and aren't using it EVERY day, this should do well enough. I've managed to bleed my brakes, restore my shift feel, get my car to turn off, found all the leaks in my system, and restored my central locking system with it just fine.
