The fact that you were driving that fast, along with some of your follow up posts make me believe that you could prove insanity before you could prove the top speed of your car......
You are about to pay dearly.....

Everything has to match.

As far as I know every detail on the ticket has to be accurate. Otherwise it is considered defective and has grounds for dismissal. If you can prove you were not going that fast then you can get it thrown out.
If you ask me the only way you can beat this is if you can prove the radar gun hadn't been calibrated for a long time. I believe they have to be done ever other day or so.

What I want to know is how you figure you can only go 95mph? My 300SD which probably weighs 1,000lbs more than your car tops out at around 105. You should be able to match that at least. If you were at WOT I'm betting the cop was right.

ALso you better prepare yourself. That ticket is going to be way more than $100. Better off not to speed. Some cops are jerks but generaly they won't pull you over unless your going 15mph or better over the speed limit.

Exactly which interstate were you traversing at such a pace? How long had you been traveling at that speed?

You do know an old RWD car will lose control VERY easily if you make any abrupt inputs at that speed, right? With all of he curves and hills on Birmingham's interstates-- you are lucky it is only a speeding ticket you're looking at.

Do you have life insurance? Coverage enough to bury a family when you careen out-of-control and take them out? Brakes good enough to slow you from that speed to about 50mph when an automatic 240D merges in front of you? Driving skills to make an emergency lane-change at that speed?

It may sound like I'm a party pooper, but I have family on these roads.

A question for the group--

How long to brake from, let's give him the benefit of the doubt, 95-0 in a w123-- let's also assume that his brake lines are new, and that his braking system is factory-perfect as well.

Take a look at the w126 crash video that was posted recently-- the one that simulated a group of cars stopped on a foggy interstate-- that was only 10-over.

Geez - I had to check and see if I was in the Open Discussion Forum. That's where this belongs.

You drive 95 or 107 (or somewhere in between) and you take what you get. I'm sure your insurance company will be interested in the outcome.

iNeon is ABSOLUTELY correct.

*flame on*

US driver traveling +/- 100MPH on public roads = irresponsible a##hat. :fork_off:

Go ahead. Rip me. Before anyone reminds me "these cars were designed to go that speed" let me remind you:

- These cars were designed to travel at these speeds 25 years ago with ALL systems in new or like-new (working) order.

- These cars were designed to travel at these speeds with a knowledgable driver behind the wheel. To get a driver license in Europe is difficult, and they don't give them to any knucklehead who can drive around the block and parallel park.

- These cars were designed to travel at these speeds on the nearly-perfectly-maintained German autobahn.

Do you know how quickly things happen at 100MPH? One second you think you are "the only car on the road." I hope to God that condition does not change. Change it does, and QUICKLY, at 100MPH.

If anyone wants to drive their vehicle that fast, for testing purposes, performance measuring, to educate yourself about how your car behaves at speed, or just for fun, then take a driving class. Or go purchase some track time. Don't put others at risk just so you can get your rocks off.

*flame off*

Apologies if this offends anyone, but risky behavior that endangers oneself is one thing. Endangering others is quite another.

I have to agree, 100+ is just too fast when everyone else is driving 60-80, the speed difference is the real problem. I tend to drive a little fast, 80-85, but it's been a long time since I've been over about 90 on a public road. If you are traveling 30 or 40 mph faster than anyone else, you are a hazzard to everyone, including yourself. My W123s are probably as well maintained as anyone's, but 20 year old stuff does break occasionally.

Take it to court. I did, and the ticketing officer didn't show up. TICKET DISMISSED.

Somewhat, the US has a lot of very nice public roads. Also consider for a moment that at least in my area traffic usualy goes 70-80, heck I was following cars the other day at almost 90, the entire left lane was doing this dozens of cars.

I don't know about W123's but in a well tuned MB 100 is a slow cruise, brakes and handling issues just don't come up. However one must remember to look about as far ahead as possible.

It does have a lot to do with what road you're on. I spent most of yesterday driving across I-80 in NE at about 80-85, with a few excursions up to 90 to pass, and I was still passed by quite a few people. The funny part was that I had to slow down to about 50-60 in a construction area after a few hours, and it felt like about 30.

100 is a comfortable speed in a well-tuned MB. True statement.

This doesn't take other drivers into account - not in the least.

American drivers are, as a general statement, far less experienced and just not as "good" as those one would find in Germany.

Say you're hammering along at 100 on a stretch of interstate you think is deserted. Can you really see the guy sitting in the left lane just over the horizon who's (stupidly) going 50 in a 65 or 75 MPH zone? When you crest that hill and see him, uh-oh, now you've got to slam on the binders or make a quick lane change at the century mark. But what about the 23-year-old jerk-off in his M3 who saw you hammering along at 100 and decided to follow, in the right hand lane?

I know it's all "what ifs" but this situation can materialize extremely fast, and if you're not VERY experienced in how a car - any car - behaves at the century mark, this has "fatality" written all over it.

I reiterate - things happen incredibly fast when someone ELSE makes a mistake and you are going even much over 75 let alone pushing 100. There is simply no place for that kind of speed on American roads. Our drivers are not educated or experienced enough, our cars are not maintained well enough, and our roads were not engineered for that type of velocity.

Donuts

did you offer him some donuts???? Go to court, see if he shows up, if so ask that you receive the fine part of the ticket but ask that they withhold adjudication. AND agree to attend a safe driving class....that might work. Either way, we have all done silly things like that. I got in a race with a motorcycle in Daytona Beach (on the interstate). He thought that the japanese bike would leave me in his dust. He gunned the bike, I throttled down on 12 cyclinders and 500+ horses. When I went by him his bike was swaying from his torque and my wind. Was it stupid? Hell yes...some people see a mountain and ask "why", others look at the same mountain and say "why not." Just a lapse in judgment, silly pride and a 2005 Vanquish S Aston-Martin.

Good Luck

whats the deal guys?

I couldn't help but notice some really nasty posts here and it sort of pissed me off. What makes you think you have the right to tell this guy what he should or shouldnt do? All you are really doing is whining when you rip on him for exceeding some bureaucratic arbitrary number that some guy in a suit ordered to be put on a sign, because (thankfully) in this country you have no right whatsoever to force anyone to do anything. period. In short mind your own damn business. Btw.... 100 isnt all that incredibly fast if the traffic is doing the 80+ that they would be in a 70... hell the other day I got with a couple trucks doing 100+ in a fairly crowded portion of massachussetts interstate. I would drive up around 90 everywhere in my 300TD if it didnt eat so much oil at that speed It runs smoother and feels more comfy. You just gotta stay on the ball, listen to the radio, and keep your eyes open... Also there are a whole bunch of points you can interrogate the cop on in court about his equipment, where from/how he determined your speed, if he had permission to be parked where he was parked, if his lights were on... i mean the list goes on and on.. do a little research.
