I really dont know why I did it..but the biker looked like he wanted some...so I thought...well, he better hope he can stay with me to the 190+ range (all logic and reason left my mind and sheer stupidity took over)...I pushed the sport panel button and felt the transmission allow higher rpm's. I think I went by him at 120...then I backed off...he pulled beside me and gave me the thumbs up and smile with bugs on his front teeth....HA! Just glad we didnt cause an accident with our shananigans. Moral of the story: KEEP IT IN THE GARAGE.

I open it up on the Turnpike as much as I can and go as fast as I can. There aren't any of those Imaginary hills or sharp turns. I don't really see a problem with it. Of course My suspension is pretty much brand new and I have new tires. Plain and simple these cars can handle the speed if they are kept up well enough to handle it.

Of course I know enough to slow down when I need to. I would never blow by anyone doing 100+mph. That would be just plain stupid. Unless it was 3 lanes maybe.

What I want to know is how fast that cop had to go to catch up to you?

Actualy the real queston is this, say you are tearing along at 150-170 and you pass a cop doing radar on the side of the road. How is he going to catch you??

The car has a built in jammer not detector. The jammer is located in the front of the car in the grille and was factory installed...Doesnt mean you cant get time clocked...but I would say I would lose him around the 150 range...and with 19" speed rated tires I would think that I would have a slight chance of outrunning him....I think I dont want to do that since that radio he has can travel much faster and the type of car may give me away...

anyway, is there any chance that my speedometer is -10 mph off? i mean, it is reading 95, but the actual speed is 105? or is it my tire size, 205/75R14?
take the car into a speedo shop- if you can prove that your odometer is off by more than 10%, you should get a dismissal.
first, check your odo. against milage markers on a freeway. then, if it is close, get some really big tires for the rear, and check it again . it will be off then.
it may be worth even buying a set of 15s w/ truck tires on them, just for this ticket. the speedo shop isn't gonna take pics of your car, just issue a paper that states how far off you are.

for the record, I ditched a cop in a datsun 510 wagon once. only cause he got my buddy in his chevy truck. gave him a wreckless, but he said he clocked us going over 100. i know i was doing 95 in 3rd to pass my friend . it did not take him very long to catch up to us.

Funny speeding story....

Back in senior year of highschool one of my friends had a pretty nice Vette, I'm no Vette fan espeicaly of this vintage (early 90's) but it was pretty quick. He made some amazing times, trips that should have taken 4 hours were done in 2 ect.

Anyway he only got one ticker, for an 85 in a 65. Guess what he was driving? A 1985(I think) Nissan Sentra! That thing had like 10hp and up until that point neither of us thought could go that fast. Go figure.

I'm not sure the innacurate speedometer will get you off. Generally you have the responsibility to see that your car is properly maintained including fixing a "bad" speedometer. You might get some sympathy if you could claim you were just going with the flow of traffic but at 100+/- the judge is going to laugh at you. Sometimes a lame excuse will only get you into more trouble. I'd suggest either a good lawyer or a mia culpa and hope for the best. Good luck!

Btw.... 100 isnt all that incredibly fast if the traffic is doing the 80+ that they would be in a 70... hell the other day I got with a couple trucks doing 100+ in a fairly crowded portion of massachussetts interstate. I would drive up around 90 everywhere in my 300TD if it didnt eat so much oil at that speed It runs smoother and feels more comfy. You just gotta stay on the ball, listen to the radio, and keep your eyes open... Also there are a whole bunch of points you can interrogate the cop on in court about his equipment, where from/how he determined your speed, if he had permission to be parked where he was parked, if his lights were on... i mean the list goes on and on.. do a little research.

He took it upon himself to post this thread on the forum, just as he took it upon himself to drive at that speed in the first place. In either case, he should be willing to accept the consequences, shouldn't he?

Now you are telling us that we should not express our feelings in the matter?

Whatever......

107/70 speeding ticket

I think cops actually give me a standing ovation (in secret) for getting my W123's to go anything over 70. The misconception is that a diesel is too slow and it probably took me a lot of time & effort to get to that speed, so why spoil it? It is like I am invisible.
FYI: don't get lippy with cops in Ottawa, Illinois: they do beat downs out here 'cause it is rough!

Well, just my thoughts.

1. That Aston Martin is awesome. Of course veryone gawks at it. 911's are pretty common. Astons are uncommon and totally pimp.

2. A 300D Turbo can or should easily do 100. Mine can and I have driven at 100+ for over an hour in the middle of nowehere. Yes, It is stupid.

3. I am surprised you (the speeder) was not arrested or given a C&I (careless & imprudent driving) citation. You need top get an attorney that does municipal law, not your friend who does insurance defense or compliance work and thinks he can write a motion and get you off. Don't count on the cop not showing. Around here at least, they usually do. If they don't the first time, city gets a continuance and then they'll usually show the next time. If you want to fight the fight, you can hire an expert in the radar gun and introduce some testimony, some people are starting to do this because they'e about to lose their license and they need it to make a living. But really, you'll probably get an offer from the city for some $$$ and hopefully no points, maybe have to do some extra credit like go to a "speed kills" class or something. I'm just really surprised you weren't arrested. 30 over around here and you are in cuffs.

4. Any argument against speeding tickets that deal with a municipality or agency being able to issue the ticket is a loser. Its like arguing with the IRS about the FED being able to levy taxes. Its all been done, the arguments are over, they can write tickets, we pay taxes to pay for the ticketbook.

I have to agree with Greasy_Beast...the original thread was "could my speedo be off by 10mph?"...NOT "please discuss whether I should have been driving 107mph"

If you don't know all the details, don't impart your values.

I can think of a variety of situations where the reasoning would be valid for going 100...everything from "brother at ER with ruptured spleen" to "that was traffic flow rate at 6pm on 128 around Boston". I've even used the less-valid "I wonder where the governor is on this rental car" reasoning. Raise your hand if you've NEVER seen 3 digits on the speedo at one point in your life.

My point is; if you don't know all the details, don't impart your values.

You're kidding, right?

The point in the post that brought about my own 'what the hell was he doing that speed in an antiquated piece of machinery' reaction was the "So.. I was coming home from church, just minding my own business on a deserted freeway..." bit-- If that isn't full of lies of omission-- I'll eat a bug.

Everyone KNOWS a speedometer can be off, and that 205 tires will most likely(IIRC my own car has 195 and those are mostly correct) make it read just a bit low.

I am surprised that noone mentioned that these cars were 'localized' for 55mph travel-- he was doubling the speed intended for our market-- the equivalent of traveling 140-150mph in a new 320cdi. It isn't as if the guys here that posted the replies in question intended to make the starter of the topic leave the board, or that he shouldn't be allowed to drive at all. It is more an example of 'tough love,' and ought to be taken with a grain of salt-- we value each opinion given-- what fun would it be if every reply was "yes, a speedometer can be off?"

Angry

Unbelievable.

"...because (thankfully) in this country you have no right whatsoever to force anyone to do anything. period. In short mind your own damn business."

I beg to differ. In this country we most definitely DO have the right to force people to obey the law, particularly when said law is designed to curb reckless behavior that endangers OTHER PEOPLE.

"If you don't know all the details, don't impart your values."

I see. So my "values" which consist of concern for my safety and safety of my loved ones on public roads can't be "imparted" on someone else? Especially when that other person is the one who chose to break the law and thereby put others at risk? This person was traveling at nearly 50% over the posted speed limit!

"Raise your hand if you've NEVER seen 3 digits on the speedo at one point in your life."

On public roads? Both hands raised. If you want to test your MB, your BMW, your Saab, or heck, your Kia at triple-digit speeds, then go rent some track time where the only person you'll put at risk is YOU.
