W210 E300D Smells Like Diesel!
My 1997 W210 E300D smells very strongly of diesel...more than usual. I am wondering if I have a leaky fuel line (although I don't notice any drips) or if a clogged fuel filter would be the culprit. I have noticed that a loss of power on climbing hills recently.
I am new to the MB Diesel community so be gentle! Any thoughts? Thanks! |

There are several items that could be the issue and my first thought is the o-ring seals on the snap-on fuel lines and the o-ring that is on the underside of the pre-fuel filter. Probably all W210 606 engine fuel leak issues have been covered here and I have experienced pretty much all of them. Search the Diesel Discussion using my ID (ncof300d) and you will find a wealth of information.

If there enough of a leak to smell you should be able to find it.
Look around the fuel filter housing, the IP and all lines to and from each. Also check the top of IP and look at the delivery valve seals. You may also want to follow the fuel line back to the tank as you dont claim to have any hard starting issues which normally occurs with the leaky fuel lines mentioned above.

Look for air bubbles in the fuel lines. ANY bubbles will cause the engine to clatter at an idle and if you SLOWLY rev the motor (no load) at about 1800 to 2200 it will start to stuble and smoke (if air is present). AFTER THE REPAIR it takes 1 (one) MONTH for the air to go away and the engine will again purr!
