I finally did it too.

I bought my first Benz - a 1984 300TD wagon with 183K. Mostly rust free, except for a patch under the spare tire, and a bit on the bottom of the lift gate. A/C is busted, driver window is stuck closed and the locks don't work. Safety brake goes to the floor and won't hold the car in drive.

It has been sitting for a year, but started and ran pretty decently even with who-knows-how-old diesel in the tank.

Looks like the SLS works just fine, and although the transmission linkage needs to be adjusted it seems to work OK - good solid shifts, etc.

Lots of details to work on, but it seems solid otherwise (I hope!)

Congrats and welcome to the forum. Your car and engine are one of the favorites here. Using the search function, you will find tons of great information on every aspect of the car.

The items that you mentioned that need to be repaired are some of the common fixes for that car. I repaired my window regulator myself for about $4 in hardware.

The locks may take time to fix. But the parts aren't so bad. You will need a mity-vac for that and anything else on the vacuum system. A/C is also doable but can cost a few hundred even if you DIY. All the parts are available. You can probably just adjust the emergency brake and it will work. The tranny linkage bushings are also not too bad of a repair to do. The special tool helps.

I drove down to the garage where the car is sitting and found that the previous owner threw (literally) in a bunch of extra parts - radiator, grille, head light mounts, etc... I can't wait to get it home next Thursday (that's when I can borrow a friend's F250 and can get a car trailer from UHaul)
