oil puddle, cracked oil housing?
i got under the car and traced my oil leak and it seems to be coming from directly underneath the filter housing, the part where it angles over to the block. i think i found a small crack in this thing. i'm guessing it was already there because that's where i had a very small drip before. but it seems i pressurized the system since i inadvertently over filled the oil and might have made it worse. what is this part?? is this something i can jb weld (ha!)? have i just cost myself alot of money??

i found one similar topic when i searched but no solutions so. bump.
has anyone ever had this happen? oil filter housing crack that leaks? |

Pull it off, clean it up real good, buy a new gasket from the dealer (~$1.80 or so) reinstall with some gasket sealer and see what happens. Then again when you get it off and can see daylight through it..... JB away!! If that works you saved some money,:D if not you were going to have to buy a part anyway.

you didnt do anything to it.
so quit thrashing yourself! as noted above, not too difficult to fix, probably. usually a gasket will do it. tom w |
If you end up having to replace it I would find on from a junkyard. You don't hear about the oil filter housings going bad very often, so I bent you could find one pretty easy.
Also get underneath and clean everything off in the area, and drive the car a bit, then see if you can see exactly where the oil is comming from. This may tell you if the crack is leaking or if the gasket is. It's pretty common for the gaskets to go on these cars, mine leaks! |
thanks guys! my dad and i plumbed the veggie side of my conversion today and i'll be teeing into coolant in the next few days. then i'll deal with the leak.

Boondoc when I replaced the gasket on mine I got some excellent advice here from Brian Carlton. Get a 6mm hex key and cut the ends off. Use a 1/4'' or 6mm ratchet/ box wrench with these parts to remove the hex bolts. I also found that I could use my 6mm hex socket with the wrenchs to turn the bolts. It was a pita but the leak I had on that side is gone. So it is worth the effort. Use some good gasket sealer too.:D Good luck

I had a leak at the filter housing to block gasket on my 409d. All it took to stop it was tightening the bolts. Well worth a try.
