One for the experts...
got a technical question for the forum experts...recently purchased several new parts(1984 300D turbo) including two new glibos(not sure if mercedes uses the same term as BMW,the glibo is the driveshaft flex joint at each end)thank you jbrady I beleive.but my question is this..as i was installing the new glibos I noticed that one of the glibos had a slight flaw.it looked as follows...
when facing either side there are six holes each with a sleeve pressed in,three are pressed flush to the side that you are facing and three that are flush to the other side.this means that three are always "poking" out of the facing side.do you think it will affect proper function if one of the above mentioned sleeves was pressed in to far at the factory so that instead of flush it is slightly past(less than an 8th probably).Is this joint usable as is?safe?fixable with a press?your thoughts and expertise are appreciated... |

where did you get them?
are they supposed to be the exact same- same part #,etc? i believe that some OE parts are stamped with a phrase in german which means "this side to driveshaft". anything like that on them? if they are set, i doubt you could squeeze them in a press without doing more harm than good. oh- I am by no means an expert, though.

gUibo=flex disk=rubber doughnut
BMW calls it a guibo, not glibo.

it sounds as if you got a defective one and need to exchange it.

Mine were flush when I got them. I don't think they should be poking out.

sadly not an option.my thought is that since the pressed in piece is a sleeve and they are all the same length,with all bolts tight they should all be at the same place.and even though they appear uneven they are in fact all the same length.seem reasonable...anyone...

I think they were all flush. Been a while since I did that job though.
Hmmmm....now I'm thinking that maybe they were all flush on one side and all poking out a little on the other. Damn memory isn't what it used to be..... At any rate I know that there shouldn't be anything uneven like you're describing. I recall searching for torque specs too so be sure and look into that. Oh, and while you're under there check the tranny mount and the carrier bearing. Might as well replace them too while you have the propeller shaft [drive shaft] out.Only if they're bad of course. no no no, should be three out on one side and three out on the other- they match up to the indentation on the flange and driveshaft. i.e. when its installed, you should not be able to see the protruding parts any more as they will be 'inside' the flange ends.

an update...

Also I forgot...Inthe end of the driveshaft(rearend) where it meet the dif.there is a hole.In this hole there is a gasket.Cannot find on ANY of the diagrams that I have available.dealer could not locate and felt that to replace a new driveshaft might be the ONLY way.is this correct?a five dollar gasket dieing requires a new shaft?they were not sure themselves. You didn't mention a shudder/vibration before the flex disc was installed so I would check and make sure the disc is lined up correctly. Also make sure it's properly torqued [sp?].
Is the pinion seal leaking by any chance? It could be the carrier bearing back at the rear. You would know if that bearing may be bad by the seal leaking. Sometimes just the seal will go for no apparent reason w/o the bearing being bad but if yours is leaking and you have a vibration the bearing very well could be bad as well..... I doubt you have a driveshaft that needs replacing. I'm sure driveshafts have been replaced for one reason or another but I've never heard of anyone here replacing theirs. We'll see what John has to say. He works on these cars every day and has much more experience with it than I. Cheers, Bill |
