Mercedes is still leading in diesels. A couple of things stated in the article that I thought were interesting are the facts that BMW and others don't have the Bluetec technology and that this is only the first generation of Bluetec. I have read that with the Urea injection system that will be on the second generation that the car will actually run cleaner than a comparable gas engine. This is what will allow them into California and New York, which have large Mercedes buying populations.

Another article that was posted also mentioned that the Bluetec technology is premiering in North America, which is typically rare when it comes to any of the German car manufacturers.

Just about every polution solution debuted in USA because it's ahead with legislation.

Well the USA are not ahead on CO2!
Diesels, ethanol flex-fuel, "hoy no circula" etc... never debuted in the USA. Having legislation ahead is a very relative matter (actually i would say that the "ahead" thing only applies to Kalifornistan...

Back on the topic: Urea injection did not debuted in the USA. It been several years now that busses and heavy duty diesel have the injection in Europe (euro V legislation, see Adblue).
Bluetec is only debuting in the USA in the light duty vehicles.

um i ran some e85 in my saturn yesterday, so i don't know what u are talking about EDIT: i digress i missed the key word DEBUTED we were getting gas cheap, that is why i took so long for eth. to get here, but south america has had it for freakin ever.

Watch out for Honda's new i-CTDi diesel technology as it might put DC's technology to shame at least from the emissions perspective. We'll see. Competition is great.

Everybody is putting a lot more faith in that Diesel Honda that would be reasonable... I still need to see it to believe it!

I looked at one back in April, very cool engine, I think it has like 6 o2 sensors. I see how they do it, the computer makes the engine run pretty clean on its own. Then they throw a whole bunch of what looks like cats in the exhuast.

Anyway it looks like a good system, and fuel mileage should be in the high 30's.

Is this concerning the Honda or the MB diesel? High 30's for a honda isn't special.

I'm assuming he's referring to the E320 V6 Bluetech.

Even though I've heard the claim of a combined 35 mpg for the Bluetech in the EPA cycle, in Europe with real world driving, high 20's to low 30's is the norm for the E320 V6 CDI EU4. This is gathered from what I've read over a couple of years on other overseas MB CDI flooded car forums.

One thing I know is certain. That 7-speed should make the CDI lightning quick. The gears are very close ratio.

Man....I so want to have a Diesel R-Class.....

That's like my wish list vehicle with my wish list powertrain....

Of course, then I have to find the extra $60 - 70 grand....

Until...of course....I can buy the SLR McLaren...but I digress.

The Mercedes of course, I know nothing about the Honda. Mid to high 30's would be sweet for an E320 CDI. Thats a big heavy car.

G'mornin' Folks,

Awhile back, when Daimler-Chrysler began the "ask Dr. Z" ad campaign, I wrote and asked if Dodge had any plans to build a Tdi Diesel Dakota pickup, or any other small diesel powered pickup similar to the 'ol VW Rabbit PU of the early '80's. Told them that I would be first in line for one, and also commented that no US automaker seemed to be interested in such a vehicle.

I received a letter in return, stating basically "Thank you for your interest, your comments will be forwarded to the proper department..." I think that's corporatespeak for "File 13"......

I doubt that the US automakers will ever get around to building a small, fuel efficient pickup. So my next automotive purchase will probably be an old VW Diesel Rabbit or Vanagan.....I just don't have the heart to cut up and modify a 300TD into a "Ranchero" or "El Camino" type of vehicle......but the thought is there....and I have a full tank of acetelyene.........

Just wishing for some sensibility in Detroit.....
