Cooling System Questions: 1999 E300

I want to change the coolant on my 1999 E300 (606 engine) and I have a few questions.
1. Is there a brand and type of coolant that I can purchase at an auto store for this engine or do I need M-B coolant.

2. Engine drain plugs...is there a picture, diagram, etc. of where the drain plug(s) are located?

Thanks, in advance

#1 - You can use Zerex "G". Is the same and the MB fluid.

Would like to know the answer to the 2nd question myself.

The drain on the bottom of the radiator and disconnecting the bottom radiator hose is sufficient enough.... I know there is an old thread on this, maybe I started it 2 years ago???

You should drain the block as well. It's a special 19 mm bolt with a drain hole in the middle on the passenger side of the block below the exhaust manifold. You can't miss it. When refilling the system, be sure to fill the block first either by pouring the coolant directly into the block through the upper radiator hose or by removing the bleed bolt that's right behind the same hose and only reinstalling it when you see coolant running out.

You can get Zerex G05 in any Pep Boys store. Autozone may have it too.

My 1999 E300DT with a build date of 05/99 doesn't have a bleed bolt on the upper radiator hose boss. I disconnected the upper radiator hose from the radiator and jammed as much coolant as possible into the head before reattaching it to the radiator.

Mine (99) doesnt have one either with a 7/98 build date.

So...is it more appropriate to leave the block filled with old coolant so we dont overheat the head waiting for the thermo to open?

I've had really good results doing it the way I described with the gauge never getting much above 100 degrees C. When the thermostat opens I shut it down, let it depressurize and then top off the reservoir. Takes a while and also careful monitoring.

My old edition of WIS (2002) doesn't mention the bleed valve discontinuance on W210's. Perhaps a newer version does and offers a revised procedure?
