Is 4600RPM the limit?

I saw a guy hold a 617 to the floor and it would rev to 4600rpm and stayed there. Crazy. I thought his tach was stuck. It sounded like 6K!

Free-Speed, 617

Allegedly, according to data, the free-unloaded speed is set at 5100 RPM, for the 617, N/A engine....

The Turbo motor may be set slightly less as the pistons are of greater mass.....:D

I have seen video of Brandon's tan 300SD hitting 5500. He has tweeked his injection pump though.

In the 240D, redline is 5,100 RPM for a top speed of 102 MPH! (if you can actually get there)

Hatterasguy 09-28-2006 12:54 PM

I'v had mine darn near 5k, sounded like the pistons were going to come through the hood!

So what's the redline on the turbo 602? I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it was 5200. Governer kicked in at about 5000 on a test when locked in "2".

My no-load redline. Loaded is around 4900rpm.

Hatterasguy 09-28-2006 07:59 PM

Somehow I just don't feel comfortable doing that on a 20+ year old engine with a lot of time on it. Don't really want to have to deal with it if something lets go...

Hit Man X 09-28-2006 08:54 PM

Nothing is going to let go if it was built properly. I run out a Lexus V8 with 235K to 6200rpm about twice a month...

you guys are nuts, get nervous when turning anything over 4k.
looking for at least 500k out of this 617. :laugh2:

I agree. I figure there's "X" number of revolutions. No sense in using 'em all up at once.
