I have a question about my turbo. My turbo used to spool up and I was able to hear the whining noises. Until awhile ago (past summer), my belt started to squeak and I was unable to hear the spooling noise anymore. However, I replaced the belts two weeks ago and I was able to hear the spooling up noise again! But, I longer hear them at the moment. Since I am positive the tension is tight for the belt, would the cold weather be a cause for not hearing the sound?

Turbo whistle/whine...whatever you want to call it

that's what i am asking on post # 33 of this thread. i know diesel don't really need it but, are those recirculating valve for MB Diesels are the equivalent of the blow-off valves for the gas-ricers except that MB Diesels recirculate the excess air and those aftermarket blow-off valves for tuners just dumps it out of the atmosphere?
OK, 85chedeng300D, I think what I'm hearing is the exact thing you are describing. Just after an upshift into 3rd or 4th, I hear this whistle/whine. I do not have any soot spots anywhere near the exhaust mainfold or anywhere near the turbo. At highway speeds, I have to vary my pressure on the pedal in order to stop the whining/squealing.

How do I check this air recirculating valve to find out if this is the culprit?

Thanks,

Ken

I've owned four 617 turbo's, can hear 'em all. Subtle, for sure, but there. All were different, yet unmistakable.

Noise is gone! Yea!

OK, took me a while to actually do something about this. I "accidentally" had two BBs fall into the vacuum tubes going to the EGR and the ARV. This finally cured this noise that I was hearing! Car actually seems to shift alot smoother too.

if I have my we in park and rev it i can hear a whistle of sorts that disapates but the turbo is impossible no to feel when I punch the pedal, it gets up and goes as compared to my n/a 300d!

One question though if I'm stopped at a light and really step on it a cloud will appear behind me, I only notice this at night when there are headlights behind me, I can't smell anything, I have a feeling these are just unburnt hydrocarbons, am I correct?

I know it's an old thread, but it's important that you let the turbo spin down before you turn off the engine. If you stop the engine immediately after running at high speed, the turbo's spinning at over 100,000 RPM with no oil being fed to it . Not a pretty picture.

After running at speed, let your car idle for a few seconds before you turn it off.

A little off topic but is there any performance difference between the two stock turbos?

I modded the intake and exhaust on mine, they are loud, you can hear the turbo spool clearly, folks on the street can hear it too, it sounds awesome.

The K26 spools quicker but it turns into a heat pump at 15psi and a big restriction well before that.

I've had three PSDs. 98 screamed like a jet, never got tired of it. 2000 wife could hear it fine, but I was almost ticked I couldn't hear it! New intake/exhaust helped but the problem was it was a different turbo. 2006 silent to both people but if you put new exhaust in it, even I can hear them(they really sound wierd). I have left it stock so far.

My 300d is silent but I feel it spool. It may depend on how bad or good your ears are. I always hear a bit of a whine in my ears anyway(too much trigger time).

This subject interests me, due to this scenario:

My 80' 300SD w/ 193k miles (OM617.950 Garret turbo I think)
the turbo is extremely quiet (read unaudible) , and the car go's pretty good, but is no powerhouse.

My Dads 83 300D w/ 301k miles (Also a OM617 I believe, not sure on the turbo model though)
the turbo is REALLY loud, noticible at pretty much any RPM above idle, clearly audible with windows rolled up. and his car has ridiculous amounts of power, I mean tons more than my car.

Why is there so much of a difference in the 2 cars?
The turbo definitely works in my car, mainly noticible at around 2.5k RPM uphill.
But not nearly as noticeable as dads car, which goes like a bat outta...

My car does have a hood pad, while my dads does not. I'm sure this contributes to this somewhat.

Is there something that makes my car so much quieter, and so much more underpowered?

Why is my dads higher mileage car have so much more power? (Was it rebuilt maybe?)

the turbo in my car spins freely, has no side to side play, but a small amount of end play, is this normal?

Is it possible that I need new bearings/seals? How much do they cost? How hard are they to install?

Thanks a ton!
Tom
