Should I be able to hear the turbo spooling?

I can't really hear it and that worries me a bit. Kind of a bad example, but on big rigs the turbo is louder than the exhaust. If I take the air cleaner out and listen with it in the garage I can sort of hear a whining sound that seems to come on with RPM, like it should. Intake growl is louder but that's about it.
Shouldn't it be louder?

I have never noticed this on either of my 126's. Not like the MCI or Isuzu that is. No there is this incredible thing that is sold on ebay that makes me laugh everytime I run across it.

With the stock setup...probably not. If you get your self a straight through exhaust and a cone air filter off of a honda you too can sound like a big rig.

My friend got a '83 617 SD with 97k on the clock (verified) and you can hear it spool quite noticeable. Perhaps its time to research what other things need cleaning than just ALDA? Perhaps restriction in muffler?

I really don't think I can hear mine. It's funny you ask, because I was wondering about it myself. I've really never heard it much, because it seems to blend in with the other noises of the engine. Sometimes I can pick it out, but most of the time I never even think of it. In my Jeep, however, you can REALLY hear it, right as it hits 1,700 rpm ... like a mini-truck ... whoooOOOOooosh! Same with my sister's Jetta. I can hear a Jetta TDI spooling up whenever one passes me while I'm running, even if there's heavy traffic ... it's a very different pitch from traffic noise, so it's easy to pick out. The Benz's turbo doesn't seem to have as much of a whistle to it.

The others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if your turbo wasn't spooling up, the lack of performance would be GLARING.

Not spooling up yes, not being able to hear it no. Like I said on my friends, its sounds more like a TDI than any other MB diesel I have heard.

I can't hear it myself. Once in a while when someone pulls next to me on the passenger side and they have their windows open I'll get a look towards that side. I guess they hear something.

Mine was completely silent till I ripped off my exhaust ( curiosity, mostly). Actually I could hear it before, if I gave the go pedal a good push, then quickly let off. Then I'd hear it a little.

The only time I've ever been able to hear turbo whine is when I didn't have the U-Tube between the turbo and the air cleaner installed correctly. It looks like it should be easy, but actually it is very hard to put on without getting one of the sealing rings mis-aligned. Eventually I got new sealing rings.

Silent.

Mine is a California model, so that might make it quieter with the extra plumbing... I dunno.

When I got home from work today I ripped the cover off the ALDA and gave it a total of w full turns and wow, the difference. The turbo spools faster now so I know it's working. I can feel a more definite seat of the pants reaction when it spools up now. Now I just have to get that tranny shifting correctly.

Slightly OT, since it's a California model, is there anything superficial I can remove? Especially from the exhaust?

I hear mine spin down when I turn the engine off, so I know it works.

I can hear it slightly if I stay on the gas at higher RPM's. I had a Subaru with a TD06H-20G on it and you could hear the turbo a mile away. The bigger the turbo, the more noise it will make. The one on my '83D is tiny in comparison to , say a turbo on a semi. Not to mention, they usually have two turbo's.
