2100-2400 RPM. I don't like doing that all day though, I get it up to 4K rpm usually at least once a day.

I also shift between 2500 and 3000 most of the time, if I am in a leadfoot mood it could come close to 4000 sometimes. Just keeping up with traffic it rarely needs to go above 2500 though.

Thumbs up

~21-2400rpm most of the time. Let the turbo pull the car around. Trans is geared so close the RPM drop is minimal

Most of these engines, particularly the 617, will tend to run better when driven hard from time to time.

Doesn't help the fuel mileage, but it is fun!

I see huge variations in fuel mileage depending on how hard I drive the car. Lows of about 21.5 MPG if I burn B20 and drive the car hard in-town. I have seen tanks at 28.5 MPG on dino-Diesel and driving the car gingerly.

My advice? Wind it up at least a couple times when you drive it - the motor will run better.

Revolutions

This thread got me to thinking abou the total number of times my 617 engine has "gone around." Unfortunately, our tachs don't have an "odometer" on them so we have to make some assumptions and do a calculation. To make the math easier, I will choose my numbers carefully. (This is a time-honored trick used by school districts to minimize chalk expense.)

For example, let's assume that our car travels on the freeway at 70 MPH. In my car (1985 300D), 70 MPH requires 3000 RPM in 4th gear. 3000 RPM is 180,000 revolutions per hour (RPH). In one hour, the car travels 70 miles. Divide the 180,000 revolutions by 70 to find out how many revolutions per mile: 2571. Multiply that by the number of miles on your car and you have a rough estimate of how many times the crankshaft has revolved (for my car at 215000 miles, 553 million times).

In lower gears (around town), the engine turns more per mile, so for a "real" car I suppose the total number of revolutions could be double my number.

The other day I kind of punched it and it revved to just under 3500, at which point I thought "gee, I never really rev this thing that high normally." Never really thought about it, but I have no idea what most people consider a normal acceleration rate. As long as I'm not trying to avoid getting pancaked entering onto the freeway, I usually take my time, a la old lady on a Sunday drive. My sister says she almost always tips 4000 in her TDI coming out of a red light stop.

What do you folks do?

Whoa....I don't think my 240D could even manage those shift points.
1st to 2nd for me is at about 10-15 mph, unless I have to get out of the way fast, then it's 1st to about 20mph and then to 3rd as my 2nd gear synchro is bad.
2nd to 3rd is at about 30-35 mph and into 4th between 45 and 50.
I wish I had a tachometer and wonder why the 240D's never came with tachs (and I don't think the Euro 300D manuals did either) but the automatic 300D's etc had them....I have no idea what the associated RPMs are, but try to shift midway between the lines on the speedometer.

What rpm do you reach on a normal 0-45 accel.?

Easy does it. When I accellorate I do it by feel and less is more. Only trouble with my 1979 240D, slowest car known, I have to clean the bugs off the rear windshield.

I have never had a transmission go out on me but these are automatics I have used, you are probablly talking about a manuals and a different body chassis and engine.
