When I changed mine, on my Gasser (the diesel's just needs to be installed) I replaced the screws with SHCS, which allows you to use those nice ball-tipped allen wrenches. Makes the job far easier the 2nd time round.

Love your site, great source of articals and parts.

Ya that can be a bugger getting those screws out from on top espically on the side of the road, wife and kids in the car (hungry) and its raining. So you just take the old screws and swap them out at the auto parts store?

I'm lucky

I have 3-4 industeral fastoner stores with a few miles of my house. I just took the old screws with me upto the store, and they didnt even charge me for them. Be sure to get the proper lockwashers also.

Socket Head Cap Screw

it's the black(usually), "grade 8" bolts that have an allen head on them. Button-head screws will also work, but tend to strip easier.

My wagon is a California model and has the same shield on the alternator. I guess it's another unique feature. I remember having to be a bit of a contortionist to get to one of the nuts to remove the shield but it can be done without jacking the car up.
