We're running 0w40 Mobil 1 Synthetic in our '83 and it loves it. I run the ultra expensive Mobil 1 5w40 synthetic "turbodiesel" oil in my car.... Runs amazing on it. Neither cars have even the slightest wear on the cam, and the '83 has over 275k!

The cam-wear could have been caused by partial blockage of the lube spray holes in the pipe that runs the length of the engine....
Ive seen this sort of thing on the old Ford Pinto type OHC engines some years ago.....

Cam & Rocker Wear
Howdy,
As I don't know what your particular cam and rockers look like....it would be kinda hard to diagnose.....however, any valve train that has way too much clearance will damage both the camshaft and the rocker/follower.....as the cam turns excessive clearance will allow the rocker/follower to bounce and will eventually deform/dent the camshaft and/or the rocker.....once this process begins, it's too late to correct it....replacement with a new/used camshaft and rockers....or in larger engines with way more expensive parts, there is a spray welding process, and the camshaft can be reground from there. Poor cam oiling?
Apparently some 617 engines have inadaquate oiling to the cam. When you install the new cam etc have a look to see if the lobes are getting well oiled. You can carry full gauge pressure and have this problem. There are a couple of passages that need drilled out oversize to correct it if present. Just Make sure to see that all lobes are getting a good oil feed. If not let me know and I will reffer you to the corrective information. Your wear description sounds like a good candidate. When the problem is present you will only have the smallest amount of oil on the lobes.

[QUOTE=Carson357;1291728]that is good, i wish i knew what caused mine to wear, infrequent oil service??
Never adjusting the valves will cause ware as they tighten up over time. Had to change a cam out on my daughters 240 because the PO had'nt adjusted the valves in years.

i used everything from the donor engine, it had over 200K and all looked like new so those parts should be fine, here are some pictures, sorry for the poor focus.

I would be interested to know what my exact oil pressure is. I might hook up the oil pressure testing gauge and check it.
