Attention 617 diesel owners, inspect your cams!!
i just bought a 116.120, and have done lots of work to it, since i drive 190 miles daily, i thought it would be in my best interest to replace the timing chain and tentioner before it breaks between home and work. so i start that today, and when i am looking at the cams i notice that the lobes are worn down very badly, so i look closer, and the rockers have very deep grooves worn in them,i just did a valve adjustment last week, but didn't pay attention to that since i need the car on monday, i ran to the junkyard before they close, and found a replacement cam, rockers and bearing assemblies, basically entire valve train. this car cad over 250k on the odometer, but the cam looked new. mine has 156k currently. is there anything that could have caused this oil pressure is very good? was it a problem with early made cams and rockers and i possibly still had those installed? what should i expect to see different with the good cam? i will post some pictures when i finish

i inspected my cam and rockers and saw no grooves.. but id like to see what you found and make comparissons.. perhaps RAYMOND45 could recomend a new cam and rocker set ;)
|
the one i found at the junk yard was like new, seems it was replaced shortly before the car was sent there

mine looks new ish.. also, weird question but a t-chain with 250k on it would it look silver? i have a new vac pump and i have no idea if they put in a new chain when they did it or not. and the tensioner looks to be in good shape i can see a mark on it that must be the wear limit(mine is far from the wear limit)

that is good, i wish i knew what caused mine to wear, infrequent oil service?? i am now using mobil one 5w30 http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_5W-30.aspx any comments or Criticism appreciated, i want to use the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Turbo_Diesel_Truck_5W-40.aspx but cannot find it yet |
Maybe it was run low on oil at some point. The valve train is the first thing to be starved of oil.

Carson 5w30 is a gas engine oil. Your best to go with 15w50 Mobil 1 as its diesel rated. 0w40 is also diesel rated but probably to thin for 617's. Shell rotella 5w40 synthetic is good too, easy to find (its on shelves at most walmarts)

"Mobil 1 5W-30 is an ILSAC GF-4 energy conserving viscosity that provides excellent all season protection. This product also meets the requirements for diesel-powered vehicles where an API CF or CD oil is recommended. Mobil 1 5W-30 is recommended for all types of modern vehicles, including high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged gasoline and multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks." |
