Why didn't you just reuse the old o-ring if you felt there was an issue?

I've used the STP ones before without a hitch. Got them free so said what the hell. Even the "OEM" ones have crap in the bypass section. Plenty of people use the Wix brand with no problem, I have one of their fuel filters on the SDL currently.

I've used Napa filters before.

The 'O' ring will fit, but it's difficult to get on properly because it's slightly too big. You just need to be careful, which means holding it in place with your fingers until the filter housing is almost seated.

It usually took me 12-15 tries to get it on right; it was pretty frustrating.

I use the Made in Turkey Frams now.

I have used napa filters exclusively since I have ever owned a Mercedes. I have never had a problem.

Also one thing to consider is petrolium products can cause rubber gaskets to swell some. So the O-ring your replacing being slightly thicker than the new one isn't definite proof of a problem. Not sealing is definite proof however.

Unfortunately the Fram 603 filters are crap. If they even have any.
For the 603 I buy Hengst. this is turning into another filter bashing thread. I love it!

I thought NAPA filters were made by WIX which is known for good quality. I have German made Hengst in my cars now. I just did an oil change on my wife's car last night. I will cut it apart and report back. I have used the STP from autozone before and it seemed the same as all the rest but I did not cut it open. I have also used Turkish Frams.

I'd run a wix before I'd run most any others. better full flow than sticks and bugs. I have only used wix once since i got the benz, but always used them on all my other rides. if they are good enough for caterpillar to put their name on, they're good enough for me.

anyway- back to thread topic- goes to show that after servicing your car- be it fuel, oil , tranny or a host of other things, always run engine and check for leaks before driving...

First timer..so slack needed. Purchased Napa 1010 (for 1976 300D), some deficiencies noted, it does not have the rubber gasket mounted in the top and bottom center of the filter as do other brands. Also, it comes with a flat gasket...and a note which advises one to check master paper catalog..not computer catalog for correct o ring.

Also: please correct me.this is a question about the details of the cannister type filter system on 76 300D. Is the keyway in the threaded end of the cannister bolt the only channel for oil through the filter? In other words, what is the actual path for filtering the oil, and how exactly does the plastic disc (installed on top of the cannister filter) work?

Edit: The note in the box w/NAPA 1010 indicates the flat gasket is NOT to be used with MB. Also, is anybody understanding of exactly how the filter cannister/plastic circular filter, slotted bolt actually work and can explain same? Much appreciated.

Fram = junk, along with STP, Penzoil, and a couple of others. read the oil filter study (URL two posts up). NAPA filters are made by WIX, which should be ok, bummer about the O-ring.

I don't understand why people don't get the OE (dealer) or OEM (Hengst, Mann, Knecht) filters. I've never had a problem, ever, with OE or OEM. Cheaping out to save two bucks on a ten dollar filter when the engine costs $2k+ to replace is, IMO, poor economy.

For MB's with spin-on filters, the K&N is a niiiice unit... the nut welded on the end is well worth the extra $$ by itself!

617 Frams aren't crappy, they have a clean, cotton bypass section... can't say that for the Mahle/Hengst or Mann. STP is full of stuff, tried it out. Purolater is full of crap too.

I don't see what the problem is even with crap in the bypass section, as long as you change your oil you should be aokay.

I wonder why Denso doesn't make filters for Mercedes? They would be overbuilt, though...

Fram has such a poor reputation with the spin-on filters, I wouldn't want any of their products on my car. Just my $0.02, that's all. Have you read the oil filter study linked above? It's really interesting, IMO - I saw that years ago. If there was a massive cost savings I could almost understand it, but AFAIK, there isn't. What are y'all paying for Frams, btw? Rusty has the OEM stuff on special for $6/ea at the moment, regular price is around $8:

I buy a half-dozen at a time along with other stuff, to save on shipping. Usually lasts me a couple of years. (!) Saves a trip to McParts at oil change time, too...

I just cut open an Autozone STP filter for the 617. My expectations were pretty low, and I was still shocked. Along with the cotton, there was an amazing amout of debris-sticks and stems, rocks and countless insects and insect parts.
