A "leak check" following an oil/filter change is standard practice on airplanes. It's not a bad idea for cars, either.

I'm biased, but I've used the Napa/Wix on the 617 and never had an issue.

New Rules

I did do a leak test- I started the car and I looked under the car for leaks. As I have always done. The leak was at the top back side of the filter housing so the oil took awhile to start seeping out and down. My driveway was clean The drip stream started down the block. In tracing the leak I thought it was my gearbox as the oil was blown or ran down the tranny tunnel. I found the leak with my hand, I never could see it. Hence the post so other can learn 2-3mins is not long enough to find or see a small but steady leak.
My new Rules for any repairs or maintance
1) run for 5min -check
2) run around block-check
3) 5miles-check again
Regards

I don't understand why people don't get the OE (dealer) or OEM (Hengst, Mann, Knecht) filters. I've never had a problem, ever, with OE or OEM. Cheaping out to save two bucks on a ten dollar filter when the engine costs $2k+ to replace is, IMO, poor economy.

A co-worker and i cut open all the 617 filters. the mann, hegnst, mahle/knecht, the dealer one is a repackaged mann filter. All of them had cotton gin waste bugs sticks and garbage inside. Some other co-workers started crowding around looking at the filters and one co-worker said "hey thats the stuff i just swept off the ground! they put that in filters?!"

The turkish fram has clean cotton string instead of garbage inside. I used the mann filter for the 603 with very disapointing results. When i pulled out the filter there were pine needles sticking out of the filter! and looking down into the filter housing i saw a few pine needles at the bottom. Sucked them out with a shop vac, currently i have a mahle/knecht filter in the 603 and i am hoping that i wont have the same result as i did with the mann.

Plus the fram fitlers are cheaper then the german filters even through my work discount. With the coupon i can get 2 for $7. Thats $3.50! each filter, my work sells the mahle/knecht for $4 at the lowest since its the cheapest brand out of all the german filters.

I agree i wouldnt use frams products in anything else but for the 617 its good!

Unfortunately the Fram 603 filters are crap. If they even have any.
For the 603 I buy Hengst. this is turning into another filter bashing thread. I love it!
damn it, i have 2 frams for the 603 but they are labeled "made in india" so i assume its the same garbage inside as all the other german fitlers. But its ok ill just return them. Maybe ill look into napa's filter!

Yeah, they even look shabby on the outside, thats the sad part. Flimsy can filled with junk scooped up from an Indian cotton field. Yuck. It went back on the shelf, and we now have OEM MB filters + synthetic oil in both cars presently.

What exactly is an OEM MB filter? If I go to the MB dealer, I am sure I could pay a lot for a filter in one of their nice boxes with the cool sticker on it, but I am sure that filter isn't manufactured by MB, so who makes them? And if they are made by Mann or Hecht, how are they any better than the ones that were found to have crap inside them? Or do the manufacturers give MB special filters that are made properly?

The OEM ones are made in Austria, Hengst are made in Germany, don't know where MANN ones are made, I've never used one.

MB has specifications that must be met and no, the mfr's don't have to meet the same specs for what they sell to the aftermarket. It may be the same, it may not. I'm not familiar with the cotton issue since I no longer own any 61x engines and I don't believe the 603 filters are the same (they are physically smaller, although of similar design.) The OE filters, as I stated earlier, are usually made by Hengst, Mann, or Knecht (possibly Mahle as well).

If they are austrian then they are probably repackaged mahle filters. Ill check today at work, but i remember opening up the MB box for the 617 and finding a MANN filter inside.

I don't think it really matters where they were made, considering the link posted above:

http://24.14.137.240:8080//benz/oilfilter/oilfilter.htm

Hengst Made is Germany looks pretty crappy to me, regardless if it's OE.

Oh, and it's the same for the 603:

Sadly the 603 filters are the same, cotton gin crap with floor sweepings inside. As i stated earlier, when i pulled the MANN filter out at oil change there were pine needles sticking out of the filter. Looking down into the filter housing i found pine needles at the bottom and sucked them out with a shop vac. If you want that kind of crap in your engine thats fine by me. But ill look for a better alternative because oem and the dealer filters are all garbage.

Photos would be nice. About the pine needles, you found those on a new filter out of the box, or a used filter removed from the engine?

I have been changing the oin in these cars for years and never had the housing leak. Make sure its clean, tighten with a 13mm wrench and fire it up. After it idles for a minute wipe the joint with a rag to determine if its leaking and your good to go.

I have used "cheap" filters in the SD for a while, don't notice much of a difference.

BTW if you need one localy in a pinch STP is a re boxed Mann filter. Thats what I usualy use in the SD Autozone runs sales, and a Mann is a Mann.

ill upload them this weekend. No i didnt find them sticking out of the new filter, it was a used filter from when i was doing an oil change.

i had pulled out the mann filter from the filter housing. I had a small pan ontop of the engine where i put the filter in. When i put the filter in the pan i saw 3 pine needles floating in the oil coming out of the filter. At first i thought it was from the tree that i had parked next to. But its an olive tree so the leafs arent like pine needles.

So i examine the filter and find pine needles stikcing out of the filter, i cut it open only to find cotton gin waste, more pine needles, and wood chips inside. Looking down into the filter housing there were pine needles inside as well. I was very upset! Im hoping this Mahle/knect filter wont give me the same grief.
