I am currently building a 240 diesel, I have a good 1982 body which has a rod through the block and a good 1981 motor, frame is rotten. When I swap engines, should I keep the EGR and blow by filter system off the 82 engine or am I better off without the EGR? I would like to have the revised breather sytem to avoid runoff. Also, should I keep the newer vacuum system and cruise? I am assuming the newer the better, but that is not the case with EGR's at least! I am not concerned with emmission laws/testing, we don't have it in my area and when we do the car will be age exempt. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Any tips on measuring timing chain stretch?
Greg

Cruise

Well I have the older type of cruise control (10 pin) and once I changed my amplifier it works pretty good. But at the same time, I've never drove a car with the new 14 pin. If I were you, I'd put the new one in, but keep the old one if possible. The parts for both systems are not cheap and if one systems seems to be on the blink, you can always switch them up.

Here is a webpage that explains the difference between two systems very well.

PS: Let me know if you plan on selling any of your 1981 parts?

Greg, I used to drive a 81 240D and my father and brother both drive 82 and 83 240D's respectively (all 4spd manuals). I always felt the 81 was the quickest. The 81 never had any oil seepage around the intake but the outside of the intakes on the 82 and 83 always need cleaning because soot builds up in that area whether the EGR is disabled or not. The bypass/oil separator tends to create a mess as well. Others might disagree, but I would go with the simple 81 intake and exhaust set up.
