Mercedes-Benz launches the cleanest diesel in the world
An interesting article. (Dated Sept. 22, 2006)
http://www.ancasternews.com/an/news/news_619109.html Two of my favorite quotes from the article: "...the world's going diesel." "Diesels of old sounded like a clashing of hammers on anvils..." -Chris

Its only the cleanest until Honda releases theirs in 08. Also the Bluetec will not be sold in 6 states including Cali unless they can make it even cleaner.

I just so happen to reallyLIKE the klatta klatta sound of the old 5 cylinder 300 ones!
First saw one of the common rail diesels on an E class wagon in finland and they are REAL quiet! Rather hard to tell it's a diesel one, amazing. The new CDI E class is still unavailable new, but if you want one, you can register it in California used if it has over 7500 miles on it - a little involved but it could be done. Those Blutec diesels are really catching up to the gas models in terms of noise, power, torque, performance, it's really amazing.

I think with a luxury car manufacturer like Mercedes stepping up to the plate with new clean diesel technology that works for the US...the rest will follow trying to do it better and cheaper.
It would be nice for a change to have a choise of diesel vehicles in the US? It can't happen quick enough for me!

I have 2 question regarding 2 different things.
1. Is the added NOx output of diesels not outweighed by their heavily reduced COx emissions compared to some of the ridiculously high COx outputs of some of the larger gassers? I know NOx is worse for the environment, but is the EPA policy of classing the diesel as 1 on a scale of 10 justified compared to an Escalade getting a 3 yet churning out 2-3x the amount of COx? Note the EU allows much higher NOx output for diesels than for gassers so they still stay within the regulations. 2. What happened to the 400 CDI V8? Fast, efficient and sexy. Seems like it only came out briefly in DE in the S 400 CDI and demo'ed in the SL 400 CDI. Seems one of the best ways to promote diesel cars is through sex appeal and status (something that is dear to the heart of many Americans). Otherwise they are seen as banale get from point A to point B kind of cars.
