Straight pipes!

I know this thread has been discussed before, but , i just had a few unanswered questions.
1. is it possible to just take the rear muffler off and just put a straight pipe on?
2. is the ride in the car somewhat undesireable over long distance, or is it just plain bad-ass

-thanks

Answers:

1) yes

2) It is a bit droning but not terrible. It might be better for you because you have a higher ratio rear end than I do.

so, if i put cherry bombs on, it is still legal, and i get a nice sound and better performance, sounds like a win win situation to me,

Is it going to be something that my mechanic is going to be like" what the hell' about , or is he gonna agree with it,

also if i opt for the cherry bomb, where can i get one?

I'd bet it would be. I've had a straight pipe for over 3 years and have NEVER had any conflict with law enforcement or passing emissions.

Other than making more noise, I don't think it will accomplish anything. I don't believe you will affect the performance either way. It may sound cool, for the first five minutes, then it will probably just be annoying.

I wouldn't mind making mine a little more quite, I'm driving about 1800 miles this weekend. After a couple of hours, noise is just noise.

I've had 2 1/2" stainless steel straight pipe on my car for the last year (built it myself - one piece from the turbo back!) and I don't mind it at all. I don't know what it sounds like without it (when I bought the car the exhaust was so rotten it was nearly rusted through at the first bend) but most people that ride with me don't even notice it is straight piped. I don't really care for how it sounds when you are standing outside the car running (I think it sounds wierd) but I don't stand outside the car normally so I don't care. Just my 2 cents.

Since the diesels don't have cats, and every modification (most states) cat back is legal, there should be no problem being legal

It might drone a bit over 60-70 mph, but the price is right. I enjoy the stock sound of the MB on both the diesel and gas models

i agree, when the exhaust hangers finally gave out on my SD at work i removed the resonators and muffler to drive it home. And yeah it sounded cool for the first hour of driving it, my friend commented that it sounded like the buses in guatemala. I thought it sounded like a old tugboat.

Anyway it got old real fast, so i put the exhaust back on and bought new exhaust hangers! Performace was the same no real difference.
