which Tie Rod End?
1983 300D W123
My driver-side tie rod end (outer, by wheel) needs replacement. FastLane shows 4 parts. 2 part #'s begin with 126, the other 2 with 123. I'm assuming that I want a # 123. Correct? Now I can choose a "Left hand thread - short" or "Right hand thread - long" The # 126 parts show left hand thread for left side, and right hand thread for right side. So would I be correct to get the left hand threaded 123 part? Thanks in advance. Also, I can't access the braingears service manual site. The whole site is 404, not just the filename errors. --Ed |

Just buy the entire assebmlies, inner, outer and sleeve for both sides. That way your handling/steering will be consistent.

Like Redassad00 said buy the whole assembly. I tried that once to buy them by separated but it is a PITA to bolt the tie rod ends back on the rod and make them fit!

Generally sharing the opinions of the other two posters, I would have at one time said the same thing. Recently however, I purchased an tie rod assembly from an unnamed source and discovered, much to my disgust, that the replacement tie rod was a rinky-dink looking modern interpretation of what the engineers at Mercedes orginally designed and produced. I then got the two separate ends, it takes a right and a left for each side, one long one and one short one, and then exchanged 'em on the OE tie rod. Used a big C clamp to 'caliper' the tie rod on the car and adjusted the new ends to match the clamp. Good enough to get it in for an alignment. The OE style ends just look alot beefier (better when it comes to steering links) to me. Unfortunately, the newer style OE type t/r ends use Nyloc nuts instead of encastleated nuts and cotter pins like the orignal. I don't really like that either, but time marches on .... we can either choose to: march along, or get trampled.

I like to think that a 'rinky dink' OE part from a Mercedes Benz box would be better than a 20+ year old part, including a worn and stressed out adjusting sleeve. Once I got the 123 Front end rebuilt, I have pushed the handling limits with no problems.
