How do you know when it's time to rebuild the turbocharger? Is it normal to hear a "whooshing" noise from the turbo upon applying throttle? Or is the turbo not supposed to make that much noise? Thanks for any advice.

It is quite normal to here the turbo spool up when the trottle is pushed. If the turbo is on the way out it will make more noise when you shut the engine off and it spins down. It should just make that whooshing sound as it slows down. If there is any kind of a metalic noise then you have a problem.

Correct me if I am wrong. I learned it from this forum. When the bearing is bad (there is no oil seal), it leaks oil. The turbo pushes the leaking oil into the engine. You will see black smoke from the tail pipe during hard acceleration. Of course, there are also other problems can give black smoke during acceleration.
