First trip

Hey all, I know I've disappeared there for a while, things got pretty hectic around here wit heverythnig I've had in the mix, the poor Benz got parked out in the project storage area after I had gotten it running (with some issues) I finally got to digging it out yesterday and ran the diesel purge thru it, didnt seem to bring out a lot of crud I could see, & didnt seem to make the engine sound/run any different in the shop, took it out for its first real drive today, and it sure runs a lot better on the road. At first the trans flared between shifts so bad i had to back off the throttle to get it settled in, but after about halfway to work the problem disappeared, I think from all the sitting. I must say I was really impressed with the handling & braking, I wasnt pushing it,granted, being my first drive in it, but it seemed to feel much better on the road I like to "enjoy" daily going home. Needless to say I think im happy with it,lol now to see how my mileage will do....
-Chris
Btw, is it normal for it to sound like its revved up when going @ freeway speed 55-60 (1980 240D w/300D motor) want to make sure I'm not missing a top gear.....

im thinking u have the auto trans, i have a 240 euro with the 4 not the 5. and yes at about 55 60 it sounds like it should shift into another gear. but dont worrie, it will go more then 80. its just that these engines are very loud at highway speeds

same with my dads 78, i think its a difference between the turbo models and n/a's. My 300SD shuts up when it shifts into 4th gear and i cruise on the highway. But my dads 78 just sounds loud and as stcbenz83 describes it sounds like it can go into another gear. But shoot we do 80mph in no problem.

The diesel purge is ok stuff but its a temporary fix, whatever problems it fixes it does so for a short time. It helped our old 300SDL's 603 start perfectly smoothly with no rough idle for about a month. Then it started doing it again.

Yeah, I figured it needed injectors. Eventually sold it for 3000. I really miss it, its suspension was in beautiful shape compared to my 300D so the steering felt awesome and it even seemed more stiffly sprung than my W123 so I could actually toss the huge thing around. Plus it had a lot more power. I wish we'd get another W126, maybe a gasser.

Ok, sounds good then, thanks for the input guys, it is doing exactly as you all say, sounds loud and like it needs another gear but runs strong and gets up to 70-80 on the freeway with no complaints. (not for long as the higher speed is letting me know I need to inspect some steering looseness issues, lol ) the wind today didnt help that any either... I put another 70 or so miles on it today from commuting and errands, gotta fix that stripped engine support though, forced a bigger bolt in it but now it rubs the frame and makes this obnoxious screeching noise with the idle vibrations, lol. It vibrates pretty good @ idle, the original car the engine was in (300) had double engine shocks, but my frame crossmember does not have the saddles for them, so I installed it in the 240 with the stock 240 supports and single shock, didnt think it would be a big problem, but might need to fab up some kind of bracket if I cant find another way to smooth it up (like more tuning).
Oh, and yes it is the automatic, lol sorry.
