Found a secret door!!! (Shhhhh....)
While working under the dash on the passenger side, pulling a new wire for an auxiliary power outlet (aka lighter socket) -- but that's another story -- I discovered a Secret Door in the passenger's kick panel. For all the times I've lain on the floor, wiring speakers and such, I never noticed this thing before.
As the picture shows, behind 'Door Number One' is a black box, some kind of electronic thing, I suppose, and a round thing that says "EGR" on it. Well, we all know what EGR means but what are these two things? Are they unique to the 1985 model W123 diesels? Jeremy

Looks like the idle adjuster on the later cars. Can't be though, afaik the 617 never had electronic idle control.

In the 123 series that location and item is 85 only. Remember to remember you have it as I believe the tach feeds through it as well. Might not hurt to examine the archives for the other functions or if you get a chance to look at 1985 service information.

That is the egr computer, but it also operates the tach. The pins on mine were green and badly corroded. Something else behind it, I don't remember what though.....

What it actually does:
*Decreases engine power / speed *Obliterates MPG *More not-so-great stuff What it's supposed to do: *Decrease emissions What everybody does: *Stick a BB in the EGR line to stop it from being used. |

Besides the tachometer being dependant on the EGR electrics, isn't the speed sensor for the AC compressor also dependant on the EGR and that if there is a problem, the ACC will not function?

gasp! I thought that those bbs were in your exhaust all the time and they tend to clog up your lines BTW i work at napa and if someone comes in asking for a "test pipe" or "some pipe to replace my cat with" or "a drain plug to plug my egr" I can't sell it to them. If you don't tell me what it is for, i can sell it. BS gov :fork_off:

I have the exact same car as you, even to the interior color.
I don't seem to have that EGR device. I'll have to doublecheck. A P.O. used it for installing a satellite radio tuner.

The EGR valve recirculates part of the exhaust gases (hence the name) back into the intake. The intent is to give unburned fuel in the exhaust a second chance to be burned, in an effort to reduce pollution. While is does do that, after a fashion, it is an "add-on" rather than a "designed-in" and does not work that well while having significant negative effects, as Zerohour3k has said.
