W123 oil pans (US and Euro versions)
I have a 1981 300D and 1985 300D. I also have a 1980 200D Euro parts car. Before I start pulling parts that may or may not fit I wanted to see if anyone had answers to these questions.
1. When I search for parts the oil pans on these show different part numbers. Why? These are both 617 engines. What is the difference? 2. When I compare part numbers for oil pans on a 1981 300D and a 1980 240D they are the same. ???? 3. I have a 1980 200D (just for clarification it is 200D, not 220D or 240D) parts car. The oil pan on this car is in very good condition. The oil pan on my 1981 300D looks like the prior owner hit a curb or something similar at sometime and I am considering replacing it. Would the oil pan on the 200D fit the 1981 300D? By the way...those of you who have Euro versions where do you get your parts that are different to US models? |
Usually 4 cylinder oil pans will not fit 5 cylinder engines, due to length and placment differences. I believe the 617 turbo oil pan is different than the 617 N/A pan.

The 616 (240D) and the 617.912 (300D) use the same pan. The 617.95x (300D turbo) uses a different pan.
I suspect that your 200D pan is the same as that on the 300D non-turbo.... |
i concur with benzcrusher.
All 615, 616 and 617 atmospheric engines use the same pans. Turbo 617 are different beasts |
I wonder how they made a 4 cyl pan fit a 5 cyl engine with out lengthing it, unless of course we are talking about the lower pan. That I could understand.
On the 200D, pull the pan and check it against your bent up pan for depth, length, width, and bolt pattern. If it all checks out, use it. |
we are talking of the lower pan not the upper pan. the lower pan on these is about 12" or so mostly square. it sits lower and acts as the sump for the oil pickup. and provides access to the bottom of the oil pump.
