I am stupid - disabling the EGR.

I have spent hours and hours reading about plugging the vacuum line going to the EGR with a BB. So I have pulled the vacuum line out, looked at it, with BB in hand, but am not completely sure what to do. Do I shove the BB up the rubber thing, then the vacuum line after it, to seal it all off nice? I am guessing the line has to be plugged off somehow, or it would be a terrible loss of vacuum. But a BB won't fit in it. I could golf tee it, but I have BBs right in my hand, how does this work? Help a stupid redneck out please! :silly:

sorry, I know this has been beat to death many times. but I honestly haven't been able to answer my question. I am not familiar with vacuum systems. One day I'll just remove it and cap it off, but I am broke now and away from home with few tools. BBs I have though.

Anythin that stops the vacuum flow on that line will work. Just disconnect it and shove a golf tee in to keep it from venting vacuum if you want

You can find larger or smaller ball bearings at bicycle shops. Use a ball bearing and put the line back on and be done with it. It will be inoperative and look stock.

Should the turbo bypass valve be disabled too?

Yes, that's called the ARV on the '85. You can disconnect and plug that line as well.

I pulled those two vac lines out of the black box, melted the ends shut with a lighter, cooled them off, stuck them back in. Worked great. :D

hold on, where is this? Right now I'm going to shove a bb up that rubber part on the EGR, then shove the line back in to cap the whole thing off. And it will look perfectly stock. But I love tinkering with things, the more lines I can plug the better!

I'm betting that your MBZ is a 1985 W123 chassis [NOT a Calif. car] with a 617 Turbodiesel engine and and IF I'm correct, this means your correct vacuum diagram can be found at:
http://www.peterschmid.com/vacuum/1977_1985/617_95/1984_1985.jpg

Now we can all use this diagram as a reference so we are not speculating so much about what part of the vacuum system the other is talking about.

Thank you very much for the diagram. I know exactly what we're also looking for. I'll plug both the EGR and ARV afternoon and see what happens. Cost: 2 bbs - $0.0001. :) I love Mercedes.

Yes, I have this thing about having the correct vacuum diagram...

... and for similar reasons I would like to see this FORUM start an official Glossary of Terms and/or parts... so What the "heck" is an " ARV "? This abreviation does not appear to match any of the components on your vacuum diagram.

Air recirculating valve, also called the turbo bypass valve (its right on the turbo), #71 on the diagram. But a glossary of terms would be nice.

Samuel M. Ross 10-12-2006 08:16 PM

And I have a lot to learn about...

... turbos on these vintage MBZs!

Steve300 10-12-2006 08:27 PM

If you plugged this ARV, what will happen to the performance of the turbo-charger?

It should build boost quicker. The ARV is only for emissions, it has no positive performance effect.
