84 300 td bumper repair

I am buying a 84 300 TD wagon and need to repair the rubber on the front bumper -it is gone. Can I just get the rubber or do I need to purchase the entire bumper as the seller has said (who wants to sell me another bumper). Also on the rear bumper the rubber is coming off in one corner so couldn't that be repaired? Any advice on repairing it myself?

You can get the rubber impact strip and plastic piece that holds it all together... I got it from the dealer bout 20 bucks or so, not sure how much it'd be today. It is an absolute bear to get hooked on to the bumper though. 2, even 3 person job. Use lots of soap to lube things up.

instead of soap, use lots of spray silicone, both on the bumper and the rubber. I replaced mine without help, just pounded it with a rubber hammer, and I'm 70 years old ...olweasel

The shop here has the rubber parts that hold the impact strip to the metal of the bumper part number 1238854323 18.50 each you need two. Do you have the impact strip or not if not I will send you one for the postage. The replacement can be a real pain. I started from one end and then worked after centering the strip towards the other end. Hope this helps.

Ditto. Thats the secret, using a rubber mallot. Sliding it on is a waste of time because they push each other in the opposite direction, so it will keep falling out.

Use some soapy water or wd 40 and pound it with a RUBBER mallot and wash the bumper and your done. It takes 10 minutes

I use hand cleaner to slide mine on, works fantastic!
No hammer needed, just pops right on.

And my hands are clean when I'm done.

I used the rubber hammer too and once you get the hang of it its quite easy.
