81 300CD NON Turbo Does not have bowden cable to tranny
My 81CD Non Turbo does not have a bowden cable. Does not appear to have a place on the tranny to hook up one. Is this correct? Prevous owner said he had tranny replaced long time ago.
Shifts too quick and flares. I am feeding it the correct vacumn and have installed a correct modulator & verified it will hold vac all the way to modulator, and adjusted it 25 times from full ccw to full cw and don't notice any change. In fact no change with & with out vac. Do some of these trannys not have a bowden cable? Thank You Phil Last edited by phillipb; 10-12-2006 at 10:27 AM. Reason: add engine |

Correct
I have have 80 and 81 w123s . No bowden cable. This is correct. Just a vacuum line to the modulator from the IP vacum control thing-a-majig. An Indy said these "4 bolt pan" trannys are tougher than the later models with bigger pans. I have a spare good one i am thinking of putting on a turbo diesel that needs tranny work. They are geared a little different but it may work nice. Have to post on that.

Yep - some older models don't have the cable. Read this article on tranny adjustments:

My 81 CD does not have one as well. You need to verify the vacuum changes as the throttle is opened, just like a gas engined car. The two white vac. valves under the black cover on the valve cover break and wear out over the years. Change both, then monitor the vacuum. Should be about 15 to 18 hg at idle then half that at half throttle. The article mentioned above is great if you're a real gear head. Try dieselgiant.com as well.

Ah yes, the old mystery of major parts chang-outs...!
Quote:
Q1 - Can you go under your car, count the number of bolts in the tranny's pan and while there take down the tranny number off the side [right?] of the case just above the pan... and tell us does it start with "722.118..." ? If NOT, it probably means that the tranny in your car is NOT the same model that Mercedes installed in her! After researching a bit, your car most likely has: Chassis - 123.150, and Engine - 617.912 and IF this is correct, the correct vacuum diagram should be: http://www.peterschmid.com/vacuum/1977_1985/616_617_91/616_617_91.jpg Your car should, for the most part, be the same as our two W123(s) shown below in my signature. Yes, read Steve Brotherton's article at: http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic20242.html and you will be well on your way toward sorting out this mystery and hopefully getting your car to shift properly withouth replacing the tranny. Q2 - Do you know how many miles the tranny has under it belt? |
