Mercedes Simplicity
I just wanted to make a comment about some things I was reading yesterday. I have a bad case of diesel lust (my wife does too...she's a GREAT woman, the finest God made) and want to replace our gasser Ford SporTrac with a diesel pickup. I was reading another forum for ford diesels, comparing the various models and issues surrounding them. I came away with a deep appreciation for the relative simplicity and robustness of mercedes engines. My 81 N/A is bone simple but even my wife's 87 is simple compared to the Ford engines (even the pre-94 non-powerstroke). Only the non-powerstroke comes close to simplicity but I'm not sure of the robustness and longevity. Anyway, I love my rusty O'l Nelly and the Scalded Dog even more and appreciate them more every mile.

The Ford pickups use international diesels and they are all excellent quality. I have heard that 350k is not unreasonable for one of the older engines.

Ford diesels have their good and bad years.
The 86-87 6.9idi is a good one, but slow unless you add a turbo. The late 80's early 90's 7.3idi is also good as long as you have prooven mantenance. Specifically the SCA level in the coolant. The cylinder is thin enough that cavitation can eat through it without care. A very ugly condition. They went powerstroke(new block, high pressure oil pump(HPOP), computerized) in '94 and didn't get the bugs out 'til 97. So the '97 and 2001-2003 are also good. There were some changes in '98 and powdered metal rods in 2000 that concerned people. Powerstrokes are significantly more complicated and expensive to fix than the older models. But there's more power stock and more aftermarket support. The 6.0 has been hit and miss. The '06 and '07 seem ok. Don't forget to look into the Dodge/cummins. If you are looking for simplicity they were not computerized until 1998.

The latest Mercedes diesels have ...
23,000 psi fuel pressure Electric injectors that fire seven times per combustion event Turbochargers with electrically-controlled variable-pitch blades. Produce one horsepower per cubic inch Run just fine for 13,000 miles between oil changes. Compare new Fords to this and decide which is crude.

I would rather PUSH a Mercedes than DRIVE a Ford anything!
Here at work we have a fleet of F 350 PowderSmokes non dually trucks and 2 Chevy Duramax's. When ever I have to take a truck, I request the Chevy. Ford is the last resort. IMHO, the Fords handle and ride far worse than any Chevy or Dodge, HD truck wise.

I believe he specifically mentioned an '87 mercedes, not a 2007.
I believe he also said simple, not crude. I think Ford's ride is due to their higher towing and hauling capacity.
