My 82 ran out on me, or so I thought. I was only able to put in 15 gallons.. But, the tank screen was so full of junk, I'm surprised it ran at all. And my light on Alex came on below the R mark.

That is good information. So the low fuel indication limits the float from moving down any farther. The fact that some cars turn on the light a little above and som a little below the R line is probably due to variation of gauge sensitivity, wire resistance and possably resistance element wear in the sender. I am guessing that the MB definition of "reserve" capacity is when the low fuel light comes on rather than the gauge needle at the R line.

Speaking of low light indicators. If there was anything I liked about my Honda Accord it was that they had a Oil change reminder. Never seen it on any other car it is probably the most useful of all lights. (other than engine is about to expload lights).
Why is it a woman can remember what she was wearing on her fifth date with you ten years later, but CANT remember how long the oil light has been on?

I still want to know about these tank imploding events.

It happens the vents clog. They crush in a little bit.

Just searched for this thread and wanted to put in my info. I figured out I'm doing 24.70 mpg, half highway and city. I saw that the gas gauge needle was before the 'R' line for the reserve so the light never came on. Still had 4.5 gallons left and of course put in 15.5 at the pump.(when the pump stopped on its own)
From some of the posts, 24-25 is good?! Right? This is still a diesel that needs the trans. shifting worked out, the correct oil put into it, the trans drained and filled, vacuum hoses replaced and also the boost on the turbo checked.(feels like its not working). thanks
