Oh look my low tank light works after all!
I didn't realize that it takes going below the low line for it to turn on. How many gallons are left at the empty line?

Mine came on today, and I put in 17.1 gallons. Only drove 400 miles on that, so not too happy about the milage. Then again, the last time I filled it, I may not have gotten it too full.

I found out that mine must no longer work when I ran out of fuel the other day.

How close to the "R" line is the low fuel light supposed to come on? Is it very near or somewhat above the line? I know that the low level light is from a switch in the sender, seperate from the variable resistor in the sender. Mine comes on about 1/8" above "R".

empty light
I took my sender apart, from my '80 300SD, and the conection for the light is crossed when the float is all the way on the bottom. At lest on the SD, it is the end of it's measuring abilities.

My guage is out of whack. When the pointer is on R I can only fit 9 gallons into it. What's the capacity of the tank dry?

1985 300D-T fuel tank
My tank is supposed to hold 21.5 gallons. The gauge is very conservative, that is, when it's at "1/2," I can add about 8 gallons. When it's at "1/4," I can get about 12 in. At 1/8 it once took 13.7 gallons. When it's right at the "R" mark, it will take about 15. I only had the light come on once; it flickered at first, going on and off as we took the turns, and finally settled down and stayed on. Shortly thereafter, we stopped for fuel and I was able to squeeze in 16.4 gallons.
Until I have an opportunity to drain the tank and pull the screen, to make sure the bottom of the tank isn't full of crud, I probably won't do an experiment, trying to run out of fuel.

winmutt,
If this is for your wagon then it's the same as mine. I need to get pretty much below the reserve line before the light goes on and then near as i can tell I still have almost 2 gallons left. I actually tried to run it dry one weekend (I had a couple of gallons in a can in the back to get going again) but got tired of it and gave up after about 35-40 miles. The only problem with such a low tank is that you don't want to get stuck on a long hill then the line may suck in air and you'll stall out anyway.
