Good info.....

G'mornin' Folks,

I was just out under the hood of my '85 300D, yesterday...and desintegrating is the appropriate word to describe the condition of my hood pad!! I was replacing those little rubber vibration dampeners that attach the air cleaner to the engine......first, before removing all of the loose stuff, I covered the engine with an old blanket to keep the debris from hetting into everything. Was trying to decide if the remains of my hood pad were worth the hasle of dealing with it. I will remove it today, after it warms up a bit!!

I looked into both links in the above postings, and had almost ordered up a stock replacement pad....earlier this month....decided some other stuff was more important to address.....

I want to thank both guys for posting their links and thoughts...I like to have good input before I make a decision on which way to go.....

The second link....the website shows some sort of paint or spray on insulation....looks as if it is more specific for sound .....BUT.....it looks like it would do the trick nicely......has anyone used this liquid product, from Second Skin Audio?

Thanx,
SB

Just stuck a layer of aluminum foil on there, shiny side down. Should reflect the heat back down towards the engine, turbo shouldn't be a problem since its covered by the air cleaer anyway.

There was a hood pad thread here a couple of months ago (search for "hood pad") in which someone recommended something like that as a spray-on sound deadener. I've never tried it myself but it would be interesting to see it on someone else's ride.

Because the turbo and exhaust sit high over that dratted trap cat on my '85 CA model, I sprung for a new hood pad with an aluminum foil reflector. It doesn't do anything for noise, since 123s don't have a belly pan, but it definitely keeps the hood cooler and I have convinced myself that it will slow aging of the paint.

Q1 - Did you say whether or not there was something special there above the turbo?

Q2 - If your answer to Q1 is YES, then I would also ask what did you use to bond your reflective layer of aluminum foil... and did you bond it to the underside of the metal hood, OR to the surface of a new foam pad?

There was nothing special about the pad over the turbo area/air box, it was the same as all the other parts. I just scraped off what was left of the old pad, and used double sided tape to bond the foil to the underside of the hood. I can hear my engine slightly better, and the hood seems a bit cooler to the touch after a drive than before.

I agree that it's better to take it easy on the paint...

So I can assume that you have not installed ANY kind of new pad.!

As to using double-sided tape to hold aluminum foil to the underside of your hood... well I hope it holds for you and until it proves itself, I would watch it.

There is a U.L. listed 2" wide heavy aluminum tape that is designed to wrap around even hot furnace ducts so a roll of this stuff might hold better... and being that we are inventing here, I would think about using such tape over a thin layer of fibreglass, mineral wool, or other non-combustible insulation held to the underside of the hood above the turbo with such tape. This "U.L. listed" tape can be a bit pricey at ~$15 for 2"x50[yds<-?]!

My parts donor had an aftermarket hood on it... The pad that is on that hood is not like the stock one... It's made out of a fibrous fabric... looks like what you use to insulate walls in homes but denser... more compressed... Seems like very high quality stuff....

When my car is up for a paint job, that hood is going on my car
