No reverse when engine is cold :(

My new baby the 80 300SD will not go into reverse until the engine is at operating temp. It will go through all forward gears perfectly all the time but will not go into reverse until warm. I havent changed the fluid and filter yet. Is this a good sign that the tranny is going?

Thanks

Don't panic yet, get the fluid and filter changed out first, as those are common causes of shift troubles, and check the pan for unusual debris, a greyish film is normal, but chunks and pieces of fiber clutch material or metal arent. If the fluid and filter won't fix it, I would guess there is probably a lip seal getting old and hard on one of the servos, and the warm fluid is softening it up enough to seal once warm. Anyone else?

mobil 1 synthetic ATF is expensive stuff but its good. Most of us just use plain ol dex III available at your local parts store for about $1-3 a quart.

When servicing the trans, drain the torque convertor also. Put in a quart of Trans-x.
