Man that sucks. To bad you didn't get the trucks info, trucking companies have deep enough pockets. You probably could have settled pretty quick for a nice chunk of change.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, I have heard some relatives say very good things about True2Form. Think I know which one you're talking about, down in Mt Mourne, across from the old post office.

Accident happened at the intersection of 150 and 801 on the north side of town. I was heading north on 801, truck in front of me just stopped in the road once we were clear of the intersection, probably someone in front of him wanting to make a LH turn into the produce stand at the side of the road. Semi was in the southbound lane of 801, waiting to make a LH turn to head east on 150. Could be I was far enough past the cab he didn't realize there was a car stopped beside him, he cut his rig sharper than he would have, and I got hit.

When I used to use that route on a regular basis, I could always expect to see someone running a red light at that intersection every day, just like clcokwork.

I'm on the south side of town, off of 115. Normally cut across to 21 and head north on it to avoid all the mess. But the day before, they'd starting putting in some kind of drainage or water pipe about halfway up 21 and created a major traffic jam. So today I decided to go up 801 and avoid that mess. Yeah, great choice!

At least I'm on vacation next week and will have plenty of time to get it sorted out. I'll be back to driving the Jeep, but at least it's a diesel as well.

May just go whole hog and have the whole beast repainted. It had some other minor body issues with it when I purchased it, that I eventually wanted to get taken care of, so may as well get it all done at once and put to rest.

A definite on sharing a beverage sometime. Other than a cookout with some relatives tomorrow and getting the car into a bodyshop, I should be pretty much free next week. Give me a PM and we'll see what we can work out.

True, but from appearances he could have been an indy, no kind of company markings that I could see. If so, it would have been coming out of his pocket, all the more reason for him to keep rolling.

But again, no way of knowing if he even realized that he hit something. If he was loaded down, you're talking an 80,000 lb truck versus a 3000 lb car. Probably didn't even screw up his tires that bad. May have thought he just ran over a pothole, if he felt anything.

I know all to well, as you said the driver may not have felt anything. My dad has moved heavy equipment on trucks, I have been around construction sites long enough to know. A large loader for example can run over a car with ease and the operator won't even know it.

I'd still be pissed though and want my car fixed.

Here it is.
http://www.silverstarrecycling.net/

Sorry to hear about the accident.
I would have chased him down for sure.

But as mentioned before he might not know that he
hit you.
My father used to be a truck driver in Europe and he
ran over a cars hood once.
He drove a big rig hauling hot tar used to make asphalt.
Never knew it, untill his boss got a letter from the
local police department informing him of the accident
and a notice to appear in court.

Louis.

That possibility did cross my mind. But I didn't realize he wasn't going to stop until I was pulled over to the side of the road and already getting out of the car. Given the amount of traffic on the road he was on (major two lane east-west road for the region and shortcut between I-85 and I-77), even if I'd immediately turned around and tried to get on the same road to give chase, I would have had around 10 to 15 cars between me and him.

Plus, one look at the side of the car, and the pieces lying in the road, convinced me I'd better check it over good before I tried moving it anywhere. The side part of the bumper was hanging down almost dragging the ground, and the electrical part of the taillight assy was jammed up against the body (potential short circuit and loss of other electrical functions).

Thanks to All

Well, the accumulated stress of the day is kicking in, and I'm going to be heading off to bed.

On the bright side -

1. No one was injured

2. The car is still driveable, damage looks to be body work only, and that wonderful engine that's been delivering 31+ mpg looks to be unaffected

3. I got an extra day off work tacked onto my week-long vacation, and it was paid excused time, so no financial loss there.

4. Have a really good excuse now to do a full job on the body, take care of some of the preexisting defects along with the accident damage, get it all done in one shot

5. Along the same line, have an excuse now to take the old girl in and get everything else checked out, just to be on the safe side.

6. Thanks to the info and links everyone provided, I'd say prospects are good it'll be back in shape in short order. Will be an unexpected hit on the finances, but nothing that will put a serious crimp on the bank account.

But yes, deep down I am pissed. After all, it IS a Mercedes diesel!

Thanks for all the help and kind words, I'm off to bed.

Situation Looking Up

Today, one of the QC inspectors I've worked with for 8 years came by to look at the car. He's had his own used car business on the side since before I've known him, has his own shop and does his own body work. He can spot dents, ripples, bondo work, etc, on a cab from 20 feet away, that I wouldn't be able to see from 6 inches away with an electron microscope. He's even done work for Freightliner on the side, repainting some semi's that came from the Mexico plant with less than stellar paint jobs.

He said he has a lot of work piled up right now, and it would be a while before he could get to it, but did give me his appraisal of what it should cost and what needed to be done if I found someone else that was reliable and could do it sooner.

His opinion was that the sheetmetal could be saved and straightened out, no need to cut and weld a new quarter panel. He agreed with me on the parts, at most it should take a new rear bumper, LH tailight assy, and trunk vent louver.

As far as pricing - $600 if I provided the parts, $1000 if I let him or whoever does it get the parts, $1400 if we repainted the whole side of the car so it blends in better than just the quarter panel.

I asked whether it would be easier repainting the whole car and having it done with, considering the age of the paint. IHO, it didn't need repainting, paint was in remarkably good shape for a 20 year old car, and at most just needed a good buff job to take the scratches out. He did recommend repainting the whole drivers side of the car, as he pointed out places where the drivers side rear door looked to have been worked on in the past, and an almost imperceptible difference in tone between the two doors that I hadn't noticed until he pointed it out.

He said that if anyone quoted something like $2000 for doing just the quarter panel, to turn around and get the hell out of there, that any place that was being close to honest and knew what they were about would be within a couple hundred of what he quoted. And that if I wasn't satisfied with what I was told at any of the local shops, and was willing to wait, he would do the job first opening he had.

Off in the morning to start visiting body shops I guess.

Ouch!!

Well, gotten two estimates so far - including parts, 2500 and 2700. Place that wanted 2700 wanted me to leave it there for 3 to 4 weeks.

In case anyone finds it useful, here's the MB part numbers and prices from the dealer -

Complete Rear Bumper Cover Assembly - 124 880 01 71 - $760
LH Tailight Assy - 124 820 05 64 - $158
LH Quarter Pressure Release Vent - 124 830 03 42 - $95
Luggage Lid Emblem - 201 758 00 58 - $6.75
Luggage Lid Nameplate - 124 817 17 15 - $22
Luggage Lid Nameplate - 124 817 30 15 - $17.50

Looks like I might be waiting for my friend at work to get an opening at his shop. For the same job, he's coming out about $1000 cheaper. For blending in the whole drivers side and the trunk lid (estimates only covered rear door and trunk lid), he'd still come out $500 cheaper.

Probably hit two more places tomorrow, just so I have a good sampling.

Big question is, how long would it be before my co-worker got an opening at his shop? If we're talking on the order of one to two months or more, might just have to go with one of these other guys.

Looks like a good time to get some of those 94-95 Smoked Style Taillight Covers on Ebay, and a used bumper! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-124-Chassis-Rear-Bumper-300E-260E-300D-300CE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40017QQihZ019QQitemZ8045090778

Buy a used bumper, its a 20 year old car. I'd get those smoked tail lights because I think they are cool!
