'87 Clobbered by Semi

Well, you can tell it's Friday the 13th. A semi did a hit-and-run on me today on the way to work. He tried to make a left hand turn around my rear end to turn onto another road, while I was stopped by the vehicle in front of me, and the tires on his trailer took out my driver's rear corner.

I pulled over to the side of the road and got out, just in time to see this guy hit another gear and hightail it for parts unknown.

Any one know any good body shops in this area?

Man, that is terrible. Years ago, my father had his almost new Supra turbo hit in the Sears parking lot and they crushed one corner of the car and just kept going. Hopefully you can ID the truck.

Being that you are in the heart of many NASCAR teams headquarters, there must be some good paint and body guys around Mooresville.

Unfortunately, I was too busy being scared s###less, pissed off, and trying to get the car off the road at the same time, to get any kind of license plate number. Was at the wrong angle anyway once he got turned onto the other road. And it was a nondescript trailer without any markings.

Considering that I work for Freightliner, I'll be doubly pissed if I happen to find out he was driving one of our trucks. Cost me 8 hours of sick time as well, having to call in and tell them I wouldn't be able to make it into work.

Hopefully the truck driver will get some sort of payback, but maybe not. For me the biggest thing I would have a hard time with would be not going crazy because I couldn't catch the bastard that did it. If he is an indy trucker, noone else is looking at his truck but him.

Get a police report nonetheless. A diligent officer might be able to link your report to the trail of destruction and put you in line for restitution.

Ditto. Also, even if you are not filing a claim, you may want to copy your insurance on the report.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear about your car. Having been victimized by a hit and run in the past, I sincerely hope they catch the bastard. I hope this doesn't hit you in the pocket book too badly, either.

Best of luck.

That sucks. I would have chased him and called the police on my cell. Lets see thats a hit and run, trucking company probably has deep pockets, oh yeah my lawyer would get a nice chunk of change out of that one.

Hopefully you can get it fixed for a reasonable sum, bet it costs you $2k-$3k though.

My hit and run occured five or six years ago on Easter morning in Providence. I got the license plate number. When the cops arrived, it turned out they'd put out an APB on my license number, so they weren't even looking for the right car.

The police told me they would send the owner of the car a letter and hope they came into the station to deal with it. Yeah, right. This was all they did in spite of my phone calls to them over the next two weeks asking about the case. Once they even called me to ask why the case wasn't closed! As you might imagine, I didn't know what to tell the detective.

I had a cop friend of mine in another town run the plate for me. It was in just about the worst part of Providence (and a lot of it is pretty bad) and the owner was a 22 yr. old woman, although I was hit by a middle-aged man. I drove by the house once but after looking at the neighborhood decided to take no action. The owner likely had no money and wasn't responsible for the accident, anyway. The damage was purely cosmetic and I never fixed it.

Moral of the story: if you're going to be victimized, make sure it happens in a small town where the police actually care and can do something about it.

Other moral: if you're a criminal, move to Providence.

This threadjack is over. Sorry, retmil, and again, best of luck.

Yep ,first thing I did, after fishing my taillight and various other pieces of my rear end out of the road, was call the local police dept. Intersection is actually inside city limits. Then called my supervisor at work to let her know what happened, then called the insurance company. Police showed up in the middle of the call to Geico. They filed a report and gave me a report number. After determining that it was still driveable and being only 5 miles from home, then I finally left the scene and went home.

After getting home, I called Geico back up and finished givng them all the data, including the police report number. Also went out with the camcorder and took some digital stills of the damage, will be sending them in to Geico as well. Just for data purposes though, only had liability on the beast.

Did discover something interesting, with the side bumper ripped out of the way - there are actually vent louvers in the lower sides of the trunk, covered up by the bumper. Going home with the window down (had to use hand signals for left hand turns), I was getting the strong odor of diesel exhaust. Apparently having the window down created enough of a suction that exhaust was getting sucked up thru the busted louver in that side of the trunk.

Checking the FSM, the rear bumper appears to be easy to replace - 10 bolts in the sides and rear of the trunk and it comes right off. New tailight assembly is probably going to be around $100 to $150 bucks. The busted vent louver for the trunk has the part number stamped right on top of it (the gods of MB smiled down in that instance). None of the plastic interior trim inside the trunk was busted or damaged. The expensive and hard part is going to be the sheetmetal work. That back rear corner at the trunk opening was actually shoved about 1/16" up under the trunk lid, where there used to be almost an 1/8" gap. And the opening for the light assy is twisted around as well. Trunk will still open and close, lid wasn't damaged.

Damn, was going to run that thing by the MB dealer next week and have them check it out, since I'm off on vacation then. Guess whatever plans I had just got scuttled now.

Sorry to hear about it

Mitchell,

That really sucks. I'm in Mooresville also. Don't you love race week traffic. My Murano got clobbered on I-77 and I think it was True2form body shop on 115 south of town did a great job repairing it. I have had good luck with body parts and trim from Silver Star junk yard out west. Google them and send an email on parts requests.

Good look. We'll have to grab a cup of coffee or "other" beverage sometime.

Chuck

Bummer. Hope you can get it fixed.

I had somebody do a hit and run on me in my Ford. Once I saw that they were not stopping I gave chase and got the plate #. The police found them the next day.
