Castrol Tection 15W40 since it came out.
Castrol GTX 20W50 up until then.
Depending on my oil pressure gauge and when it gets really hot here, I might go back to 20W50.

That's on the 300D & E420

Rotella T 15w40 for the first few changes.

Changed to Rotella 5w40 Synthetic this winter, and staying with it! (heard bad things of engines leaking when run on synthetic, then taken back to regular. Oh well, I like having synthetic! )

My ~$40 oil change:

2 gals of 5w40 Rotella T Synthetic @ $15/gal
1 oil filter (Mann or Hengst) @ $8

People think I'm nuts when I tell them this! Then they really go bezerk when I tell them that I Pay $30 for Blackstone to do oil tests!

(p.s. Blackstone had great praises on my last change for how good a shape my engine was in. They have recommended my to try 4000 mi on this change and see what it looks like...........)

AHHHHHHHHHH.............Diesel, not a driving choice, a LIFESTYLE!!

Lightbulb Can't we just make this a sticky? The oil thread to end all oil threads!

I've spent several hours searching for oil recommendations on this site, because a few months of watching before posting has revealed that OIL is a dangerous subject.

But every newbie asks the same questions:--what type, how often, which brand, what rating, which filter, can I mix it, do I use synthetic, etc?

Must become very tedious to the veterans. And newbies get frustrated too, because despite the hundreads of oil threads out there, most do not actually contain much useful info--just pages of flaming.

My search is over! This thread (thanks to the originator--whose name I've forgetten, having read 12 pages now--setting good rules) is actually useful. A straightforward poll, with some simple explanations anyone can understand. Sticky, please?

Maybe even create a "newbie" sticky, for all the other tedious, but important questions we fledglings ask.
