Have you ruled out fuel, glow plugs, and or compression issues? When was the last valve adjustment?

sounds like glow plug issues.

please dont use ether on your diesel. it will blow your head gasket in a heartbeat!

yeah still looking at all options

i've still not ruled anything out, while the gp's are running they may not be up to the task as for fuel there is fuel going to the engine i pulled an injector and it spurted forth as it should. the really worrying thing is that it doesn't even ignite the ether that i squirt into the thing i'm starting to think there may be some obstruction between the air filtre and the engine or maybe screwed up valves but it started the day before perfectly fine, this is driving me nuts but i certainly will try everything i can but i have virtually no tools and as a student i am far too broke to actually go to a mechanic but thanks dude and any more advice would be soo incredibly welcome

hmm VALVES!

i was just looking at the amount of crap in my intake and it must be gunged up valves because despite the adverse effects of ether if there had been any getting into the engine it would have started. so fingers crossed because i have an entire parts car to disassemble if i need anything hell if i must i'll just swap the engines because the other one runs so beautifully i had been planning to do it for some time anyways so now i have an excuse. though i'm fairly certain that's the most likely trouble please keep the advice coming just in case it's not

have you tested the glow plugs?

this is very very likely the only problem. with out functioning glows i dont think ether will ignite. it is not a spark engine.

if the engine is sound, and it must be if it ran yesterday, then it will start if you pull it...
without functioning glow plugs.

if it is a stick get it up to ten mph and let out the clutch with it in third gear. if it is an automatic get it up to thirty or thirty five and pull it into third. when the engine fires be careful not to run over your tow car. put it into neutral and give it some pedal to keep it running while you stop.

but 98% chance it is just your glow plugs.

dont even think of changing motors til you are 100% sure your glow plugs are working.

imho

Also Check the glow plug strip fuse. You don't say what year 240D you have. This makes a difference as to where the glow fuse is. The early glow plugs are hooked in serries so if one is bad, all of them won't work. The later 240D's have a paralell glow plug setup. If one goes bad, the remaining ones will work....BUT, they won't start as well.

Since your car was running well just before this incident. As others have suggested it is most likely your glow plugs not recieving operating voltage. When the light is on in the dash you must verify that there is 10-11 volts out front on the glow plugs. This can be accomplished with a meter or even a twelve volt test bulb. This is the most likely senario especially since your dad installed new plugs reciently.

81 will have the parallel setup, the plugs run off of the relay module (black square box on driver fender front end) and there is a strip fuse under the box cover. Check your voltage at the plugs as others have mentioned, also, if work was done in there right before this, make sure the brown vac line to the IP shutoff valve wasnt jarred off or loose.

Although this test doesn't tell you if individual glow plugs are working or not, I watch the dome light before and after the key is turned on. When the glow plugs are getting current, the dome light will dim when the key is turned on. No dim, no glow plugs. Crude test but it works.

fuel

it looks like it was crappy fuel i filled up at esso right before and that looks like the trouble i smelled some of the fuel squirting from the injectors after loosening them and it smelled like paint thinner which i don't think is exactly a good thing
