If BS was music!

If BS was music, this guy would be a brass band. But then maybe his story is legit. What do you think?

That engine looks old and the injection lines are oxidized like they have seen plenty of salty winter roads.

The seller posted this today:

Not very succinct, is it?

Looks good to me, has records, an enthusist owner, and a newer engine and trans. I'd have to look at it on a lift but the body looks real nice. The suspension has been redone thats another huge plus. Looks like all the high dollar stuff that I am currantly replacing on the SDL has been done. Only downside I can see is the front seats need to be redone, thats not to big of a deal.

If I was in the market I would be very interested, one of the better examples out there thats for sure.

I've got to agree with Hattie- my injector lines and most of the engine look like that (probably worse) and my engine has no blow-by. The interior is a little rough, but the 59K is the big deal here. It sounds as if he really cared about his car.

RnsWScissors 10-15-2006 01:59 PM

I am not accusing anyone of anything but

It looks to me like the entire car was under salt water as if a flood and then left to sit without cleaning. I have run across several salvages that look alot like this car under the hood and definately in the interior (the green color in the seat foam in the front seat pic) It may be all on the up and up but it seems awfully suspicious.
:idea2:

Money pit is a term he would have no difficulty understanding. If nothing else and he is telling the truth. A total list of what needs attention this coming winter might be interesting as well. He will probably get a chance at it as his reserve will probably be too high. I could also see this much work required. Especially with a car that has had the odometer rolled back more than once. Or failure of the speedometer head at some point that was not dealt with for years. Those front seats are pretty bad as well for 279k. I own 123 examples with 240k and 210 k. The original front seats in all ways are still pretty well like new. But to be fair they are vinyl tex. Most cars vended on ebay for example really disturb me by their general poor condition and claimed lower milages than all the wear indicates.

My SD has about the same mileage and the seats look exactly like his. Its because the leather isnt as tough as the MBtex as you stated. MY 87 300D has about 250K with MBtex and they are near perfect condition except for the fading rear.

"lipstick on a pig"...

I don't know. I think it's what it's said to be.

I've incorporated parts from 5 different 123/126 MBs into my 300SD. Were I to tell a buyer about that, I guess I'd just sound like a salesman? This kind of upgrade (seats, interior etc., with a stronger motor if not a new one) is exactly the sort of thing old Audi Quattro folks do all the time- that's my other obsession- so I don't know but I think it's probably just the bizarre story of what happened.

if you were big in the dot com boom like some of my buddies were, you could tell tales of the Astroturf party, the 911SC dukes o' hazzard shenanigans, and the Scotland castle hijinks. I witnessed the first two, didn't make it to Scotland.

What if this guy was just telling the tales of an MB misadventure? I built a 1989 Audi Quattro with the interior from a 1990, and 1988 axles, diff, and driveshaft, to say nothing of the 1993 rims- drove it home to AZ from NH, too.

If I tried to sell that, would you call shenanigans?

Has no one learned not to purchase sight unseen from ebay?

junqueyardjim 10-17-2006 11:16 AM

I read the ad again, still feel the same way

Again I would say, if BS was music, this guy would be a brass band. He totally kills this ad with his words. The car has 4 days to go and it sits at $2025.00 and I say his prospect for much more is limited. With all his words and all his pictures, it all adds up to a money pit. Look at all he has done too that car, and still look at what remains. The engine, wheels, interior and suspension do not show up well at all. My little old 300D I think shows up much better. Well, he has a reserve and it will live to sell another day. Maybe in the meantime he will find a parts car with a useable interior. The one he has pukes!

I live close to this guy, if anyone wants me to visually inspect,

I live in Mt holly about 30 or so minutes from most places in charlotte, so if someone is wanting a non affiliated view of the car, just let me know.
