Glow Plug Maintenance and Glow Plug Reamers??

I was wondering, is a Glow Plug Reamer necessary when replacing/renewing Glow Plugs?

The right size drill bit carefully manipulated can remove some of the carbon deposits. Don't forget to use some Never-Seez on the new plugs. Steve

Also check www.baumtools.com for GP reamers. And some forum members are offering theirs for rent--look at the tool rental program sticky.

I used a reamer when I changed GPs on an OM606 recently, and am glad I did. Pulled out quite a bit of junk. Be sure to put something on the business end of the reamer to capture the junk so it doesn't all fall into the chamber. Motor oil does the trick; I'd be a little leery of anything as thick as grease.

Use a torque wrench to set the new GPs. If you don't already own one, treat yourself to a good one (not the $20 ones on ebay). It's a wonderful tool, and you shouldn't be working on an MB without one.

You will surely extract a lot of crud from the chamber with this tool.
Rent it if you want or just eat the $60 and buy it. If you own your benz for a while, you will probably end up doing the GP more than 1-2x.

I intend to purchase the reamer......I have looked around and have found one that I like the looks of......and will get my Glow Plugs from the same source.......

I have been thru several online parts houses and tool suppliers......those folks have the best price on the Glow Plugs (Bosch, I phoned and asked).......and the reamer is competative, and from the photo in their catalog it looks as if it has a universal attached for operation with a ratchet or speed wrench......

As far as Torque Wrenches....I have a couple, different sizes.....Snap-On, my favorite tool supplier is the local Pawn/Hock Shop.......I have purchased a good many tools from Tool Trucks as well.......but if you have time, and a bit of patience......browse your local Pawn Shop on a fairly regular basis......just after hunting season is a good time to purchase Rifles......around Christmas and Tax Time (April) are good times to look for good tools.....

And a note that relates to Torque Wrenches.......get ones that read in Metric Units.......as most who read this have at least 1 Benz.......the Metric System, use it.....don't convert it......I used to tell new Assistant Engineers this......get used to your Lube oil pressure being 3 (not 45), and ambient temperature to be around 21 .....the whole Metric System is quite simple in it's entirety.......and interrelates with itself far better than our system does....example......1 metric tonne is equal to 1000 Ltrs of water (at some particular temperature) and 1000 Liters is equal to a cubic Meter.....so a Meter cubed is approximately 39" on a side......and now you know approximately how big a Tonne of Water is......you can use this the next time you see a swimming pool, and can easilly guestimate the pool capacity......in order to add chemicals.......etc........

As I stated earlier......I did do a price comparison.....

Phil's Bosch Pin Type Glow Plugs are.....$13.23 each or $66.15 set of 5

Perf4Benz's Bosch Pin Type Glow Plugs are...$11.04 ea or $55.20 set of 5

and Phil does not have the Reamer......so if I ordered from Phil on this particular item......it would cost more for the Glow Plugs and I would still have to order the tool from another source.......and therefore would have to pay shipping for each item.....

Perf4Benz does not have the cheapest Reamer.....however with shipping from one source...they win .......

I do order from Phil......whenever I find his stuff to be competative....or if I need several items.....and all can come from one source.....shipping costs are the key here......

Sorry, I do appreciate Phil's sponsorship of this website and forum....and as I have said.....I do purchase stuff from Phil, and I like the fact that he generally has items from different manufacturers...and lists them for easy comparison......in this case, because the other folks were a couple of dollars cheaper per Glow Plug, I wondered if their parts were from a supplier in "Deep China".....so I phoned them and asked who made the Glow Plugs...."Bosch" was their answer.....
