Question 1981 240D Climate Vent Problem

I recently bought a 1981 240D with 205000 4 speed manual transmission, and had it shipped from California. I have done alot of work on the car already including: located two leaking vacuum components(fuel door, and rear passenger door), and replaced them. New window gaskets installed. New brakes installed. New glow plugs along with a new Bosch Relay. New tie rods. Two new engine mounts. The car is running great except for a couple of small issues. First off, one of my engine mounts was cracked, so I replaced them both. After doing this the car vibrates more now, then it did with the broken mount. Second, when I turn the heat on it comes out of the defroster vents, and the two side vents, but only cool air is coming out of the center vents. I can manually close those vents, but then nothing comes out of them. Finally, when I start the car and it is cold, there is a rattling sound coming from the transmission. However if I press the clutch it, it immediately stops. But once the car warms up, the sound is gone. I know these are alot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW I absolutely love this car. This is a great site. Thanks in advance.

On the center vents, that's the way my car works and pretty sure that is the way it is supposed to be. I'm fairly certain the center vents are for fresh air and air conditioning only. The operator's manual calls the center vents the cooling vents and the lever the cooling lever for the center vents.

As for the noise, have you checked the rear transmission mount? Mine evidently got soft from oil and caused a banging noise. Also check for loose shields on the exhaust system.

center vents wont stop blowing

Its cold and my center vents wont stop blowing cold. Air comes though no matter what. Is the center vent control vaccume related or mechanically controled. my vaccume system is in need of fixing. no A/c.

Ditto on my euro. Center vents are def cool.

Is it not getting hot enough? Europeans cant build an AC unit to save their lives but they sure can whip out some heat.

Yeah the side vents crank out enough heat to melt an iceburg, but I am wondering now if the center vents are supposed to also provide heat, or are they designed to just be used with the AC? I will check the transmission mount, does anyone know wher eit is on a manual tranny?

The tranny noise could be the "throw out" bearing. The trannys are fairly easy to pull. Ask a good MB shop to "take a listen"

If it is the throwout bearing, is it something I need to get fixed ASAP? Can it cause any damage to the tranny? Thanks for all the replies

The climate system is designed to never blow warm air from the center vents. Manual systems as well as auto climate systems. If it does blow warm from them then there is a vacuum problem. The reason they enable the outer vents to blow warm is to direct them to the side windows to help defrost them.

I'd like to know about the motor mount vibration as well as mine is a simliar car which I'm planning to change the mounts on. Maybe the tranny mount needs changing as well?

I dont know what would happen if you just let it go. Have someone "listen" that knows old MBs. The noise has always "inspired" me to fix it

As to your viberation, did you check the front mount. I gota say tho, I've seen some way destroyed front mounts without extra shaking. Turn up your idle

240's I've seen do have another motor mount under the front pulley. Forgot about that one.

C.Doner, the lever under the center vents is manually operated, no vacuum. It opens and closes the center vents.
