1965 200d 4 speed manual, buy?
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/car/221468672.html
Ok, as a first diesel mercedes, how about this one? It is a 4 speed euro import, it seems. I would imagine parts would be hard to find for this car, and it looks like it could use some work. Does anyone own a diesel Heckflosse and could give me some tips/specs on this vehicle? Probably not alot of horsepower being a 4 cylinder 40+ year old diesel... Does this car look like a good buy, and where could I buy parts for it if it is? Thanks |

it doesnt look too bad. if it checks out as the seller says it may be a good deal.
these years were known for rusting badly so if it isnt a southern car it will probably have cardboard in the floors. mechanical parts should be readily available. tom w

Geez, what's with all the biodiesel conversions? It seems like nowadays just about every MB diesel seller talks about "converting" to biodiesel.

I see "biodiesel conversion ready" on most diesels for sale. When I go look at at diesel MBs, the seller usually says that people call him about the car... Call him and say to use biodiesel in it and keep it! The interior looks pretty good as far as I can tell from the pictures. Is the shifter covered by a bag or something? The seller should have taken the junk out before pics . What website would sell parts for this, or does the dealer have most of them?

As a guy who has had pretty serious cervical spine surgery as a result of a rear end collison in a car with a poorly adjusted headrest, I'd never routinely drive a car without head restraints. Driving without a shoulder belt could resolve the neck problem, but it puts the face into the steering wheel.

I do know that you don't need to convert anything for biodiesel, except some fuel hoses if they degrade. And a few filters need to be replaced when the biodiesel cleans out everything, but that is pretty much it...
I would buy a car from a person that did not know the difference, if they did not try to "convert" it, of course. |

but sometimes i think back of what would have happened in an accident and shudder. the us cars of the fifties and sixties had these steel dashes, switches and stuff that would slash you and steering wheels that would break off then impale you with the hub and the broken pieces. i fixed up my uncle glen's last studie, a 64 cruiser with 34k original miles on it for my daughter to drive but soon took her out of it from fear of an accident. and that after i swapped in a three point belt setup from a 240d and fitted lap belts in all five seating positions. or was it six? i put her in a 240d and sold the studie to a friend. tom w

my brother had a 66 230 which had a floor shifter.
but after looking again, it is a column shifter. it looks to be in reverse, too. my 61 and 62 finneys both had it on the "tree". it was a sweet shifting setup too. tom w

for what it is, it is FANTASTIC.
I really agree with TheDon on this one! If it isn't rusty and you aren't in a hurry, this thing has serious hoodride potential. You just can't duplicate that cars patina and personality, never will be able to again-- I'd say jump on it if you have a daily driver already, a great second car to tinker on!
