w123 rear axle removal impossibility
'83 300D turboDiesel sedan, auto
I messed up and tried to pull out the axle from the diff side first. I wiggled and wiggled (pretty hard, by hand) and it didn't come out. so I tried to push it back in so I can start off by removing the hub side first. but then the axle would not go back in the diff. The spline would begin to go in then stop about a 3/4 of an inch before the end. I tryed smacking it back in. Raising the diff, undoing the rear shock, caliper off, swaybar off. and I can't get the darn thing in all the way. I think I will have to cut open the can closest to the dif with a air powered cutter. I noticed that there was a washer type of thing that was comming out with the axle on the diff side. I don't know, what can I do, I tried beating the can with a mallot to get it back in the diff with no luck. it's driving me crazy. |

No, don't beat on it. Did you open the cover on the differential and take the c-clip off??

The washer thing?? On the outside of the differ.? That is a spacer. Keep that you will need to put on the new one.

Also, did you take out the bolt in the center of the wheel hub? That holds the axle in on the (rotor) hub end.

yes, every procedure in the haynes manual was followed to "t" except to pull out the axle on the freakin flange side, i didn't know what that meant, thats why I started pulling it out on the diff side

Yes it "should" be easy. I did my 240D a month ago and it was fairly easy. I took out the other end first though. Does it seem like the splines are binding trying to push it back in towards the diff.?

You have a replacement axle? If you have someone to help, put the tire back on and spin it forward and back in jerky motion as you mess with the shaft. Trying to push it back in. Also remember Haynes is not allways accurate for each model. Good luck anyway. Give us a post when you get at it again.

top nuts of shock has been removed, but the arm will only move down so much, if the jack is under the diff, when diff is raised the arms will move with the diff. you get an inch or so more removing the shock mounts from the top (wich i did).
has anyone encountered the problem of trying to reinsert the axle and it's not going all the way in diff? what could be the possible causes? |
