Anyone know where to find starter brushes.

.
Hello All

My starter finally gave out yesterday.

I took it apart today, and it looks like it just needs new brushes.

Does anyone know where to find brushes for an 81 300D starter?

Thanks

RichC

Not generally a DIY job.
The brushes are on the end of multi stranded copper wires.
The end of these are spot welded to the fields .

The brush tension springs get weak too.

There are some starters that have a brush assembly using a bolt on bridge or tail. Most Bosch starters use the weld on type.

Being as the starters last so long as a rule...a Bosch X is worth it.

Still........no harm in asking around...someone may have 'been there, done that !

Did you check I-35 Imports for a used unit ?

We are all here to learn how to fix these cars arent we?

Besides, why would I want to buy a $200.00 part for a $800.00 car?

Have fun !

We moved to Anna, Texas about 8 months ago.
If I still lived up in Oklahoma, I-35 import would probably been the first place I went.

Guess I should update my information on the board.

Thank You

I would like to know where to get these myself. I had a VW diesel Bosch starter that needed new brushes. I cannabalised another one that I had ( that had an internal short) and simply cut and soldered the copper mesh wires that connected the brushes to the field coils. It has worked fine for 6 months now.

I saw some brushes for it ( the VW starter) on advance auto's website, but the listing was confusing and I wasn't sure they were correct for the starter I had. Seems like they were about $10/pair.

You might approach a stater and alternator service place to see if they might sell you a set of brushes. Also since you have thje starter knocked down. They might even weld the brush leads in for a nominal fee. On the otherhand they may try to gouge you. The latter seems to be my recent experiemce in the last while when trying to get people to do simple jobs. Way of the times I guess.

just goto a local rebuilder, that says they fix everything.... (sort of long winded)

I worked for a Bosch WD back in the 80's. Basically, they can get any part for anything that has a 10 diget Bosch part number on it. We used to get all kinds of weird things for people.

Fast forward 25 years.....

I had (major) trouble with an alternator for my 914/6. The first rebuilder was incompetent, the second did a junk job. Eventually, I found a good rebuilder. The leason learned was look around, find someone compenent.

I would think that ANY rebuilder that says they do foreign car starters and alternators could get these brushes. If I needed them, I'd hunt down my favorite rebuilder (Weaver's in lancaster county, Pa) and ask them to match up a set.

The Mercedes dealer can get just the brushes, and bushings if you need those. You might also try the host of this site (Buy Parts above). Don't even try your local Autozone or such as they don't carry stuff like that any more (just rebuilt). NAPA might be able to get them though.

O Riley's list brushes for the 240D but it shows Borg Warner or Delco-- not in stock --special order. If you take what you have in they may be able to find a similar brush set. I have not opened my starter up yet, I don't know if they are some radical design? I doubt it. I have a 74 Scout and we have to do this often to get the parts I need. Good luck.
