Pity it won't fit upside down

I had the spare tire on my car while repairing the right rear tire of a huge screw it found yesterday on Petaluma Hill Road (first photo). Today I put the repaired tire back on the car and returned the spare to its home. This requires removing and replacing all of the spare parts and tools that live in the well with the spare.

I realized that, if the spare were put in the well upside down, there would be a lot more room to store little things (second and third photos). Granted these same things could go under the wheel but one would have to remove the wheel to get at them. Unfortunately, the bracket that holds the spare is a little tall, holding the spare too high. If a replacement bracket could be fabricated and welded or bolted into place, it could be made to work. Has anyone tried to do something like that?

Apparantly, Mercedes felt the same way. The spare in my '96 is outside-down.

I saw a plastic bucket on a site somewhere that was made to fit in the spare wheel on a Mercedes. I think if you search a little you might find what you want. I am sorry I cant remember where I saw it, but I wanted to tell you they are out there

I fear needing to use my spare period, I have stuff piled up in there practically a foot below the trunk lid... If I need it I'll have a small mountain of junk laying on the ground at the side of the road while changing it....then I'll have to heave it all back in....

Must be a youth thing. My trunk used to be full of crap too, when I was younger. Now it's empty, unless I'm actually transporting something in there.

I guess at any age a blanket can come in handy.......
That is one thing about a wagon. You can haul stuff in it, but you don't really have a good sized "hidden" area to keep day-to-day stuff in.
It is handy when a larger object needs transporting......

Hey, I'm not an old geezer, I'm a recycled teenager!
I try to keep my trunk fairly neat and clean. I do try to put stuff in the trunk instead of just in the cabin. I really like to keep the cabin clean. Plus, if I stop or turn quickly, I don't have all kinds of stuff flying around the car.
Seems to me my old 560SEL had the bucket thing (technical term) that went in the spare tire. Spare was mounted face down. Bucket did a great job of holding tools and such.

At least you won't have to add weight in your trunk to get traction in the snow.

On the wagon it goes in face first, so you have access to store stuff.

How do you check the pressure in the tire if it's upside down?

Don't tell me you don't check it!!

Where do you put your tools, your block heater extension cord, your tire chains, your jumper cables, and your spare fluids?

The spare in my 87 fits face down. There is also a bucket that threads in to hold the spare in place. You fill the bucket with your small stuff and it threads into the trunk floor to hold everything snug.
