Fuel leaks as a result of using ULS diesel fuel

Friends,
It has come to my attention via personal experience and technical information sources that Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel causes o-ring seals to shrink and leak.
What if anything have you experienced regarding diesel fuel leaks in the last few months?
Regards,

Sad, but true. Some folks have reported minor leaks while others have experienced gushers. I had a small leak at the o-ring seal on the rear of the shutoff valve. Since I started using ULSD the leak grew worse to the point I could no longer ignore it.

re:

Is this just a matter of replacing old seals, or do they have to be replaced with a different material?

I am planning to start using ULSD soon...

My injector delivery seals (all 6) on my wife's 124 leaked like a sieve, along with my return lines. I bought new seals (o-rings and copper washers), replaced them all, torqued back to spec (32Nm, 32Nm, then finish off at 35Nm) and it no longer leaks. What I found was that 3 of the six were cracked/split and the others were as hard as a rock. Pretty simple procedure, search the archives for "injector delivery seal". Phil was out of them and there was a nationwide backorder back in August. I bought the last 6 from the dealer near work. Replace them and you'll be amazed at how clean your engine is afterwards...and no more smell of diesel (its a beautiful smell though). I also got kudos from my wife for fixing it...BONUS!

You're likely using it right now. ULSD has been in full production since June. This isn't really a situation where your local station can opt out of the decision.

Once problem seals are replaced, it's not likely you'll have future problems. The trouble starts when the aromatics are removed and seals being their retreat. A marginal seal/o-ring is likely to be made far worse when the car is filled with ULSD.

Honestly, if the car is not leaking, I don't think I'd start taking things apart.

HTH.

20 year old seals tend to fail, not much you can do about it.

Yep, now if it caused leaks on say a 2004 E320CDI well then I would agree thats a problem.

But if your 20+ year old IP starts to leak, well thats just part of owning an old car, it happens.
