Damaged by others.......who pays?? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

So i the insurance people finally came over today. they checked out my damage and cut a check for 2K. now what had happened was my car was sittin in my friends driveway, and she backed out into it. causeing the driverside passenger door on my 240D to kind of cave in. The door still functions, IE power lock and the window. the trim on the top is twisted. the paint cracked just a little.

I opend the door up today and i cannot find any dents on the inside of the door

i guess the door may have an outer shell or somthing??!?!

any who my delema is that should i pay to have it fixed, which each shop i took it to quoted around 2K ne ways. or sould i just drive it like it is, and maybe pick up anther W123. maybe 300 turbo or 300SD or 300CD?? or should i invest the money an have the door fixed? the paint and everything still looks good, it just kinda dented in, since i cant find the dents on the inside, i assume its not that bad..

any comments???

If you can afford the seperation anxiety I would go for a newer car. 240 is to slow for me.

BTW. the car is a 240D EURO that was in florida and georga most of its life. there is a tad bit of rust bubbling from the inside out on the right front fender, other than that. NO RUST!! undergcarage is clean as a wistle. over all in great shap with 250k ON IT

And tell us what insurance company cuts a $2000 check for a 240D and doesn't total it!

If it were mine and I like the car and want to keep it, I would find a "new" used door. There plenty of them out there. I recently priced them and they range from $175 to $300 + shpg.

And yeah, am curious too about the insurance question Sixto asked.

157k ish, bought around 151k. Dunno when the clutch was last replaced but I'm pretty rough on it and it hasnt blown on me yet.

When the body shops were quoting you 2k did they mention if there was any damage beyond the door. Either rates are extreme where you live or damage is more than just the door. All the average body shop would do is get a used door, install it, and try to match the paint usually. You should be able to find a door pretty cheap yourself. They are on ebay occasionally and think the last one I saw up did not even get a ten dollar bid. If the dent did not break the door glass any shop might use a stretcher and pull the door skin back. if you just pop the dent it will not be stable usually if pretty big on a door as the perimeter frame may have pulled in a little. You could get a decent compressor,spray gun plus paint,and used door for under two grand and have the equipment for free so to speak. Plus money in your pocket. Now if the surrounding frame areas of the door are moved this is a different story. Most adjusters are pretty tight and two grand seems more than they would normally pay for only the work you are mentioning. Perhaps the adjuster just had an unusual day or was seriously ill.

I dunno, my father laughed that i got that much. I opend the door today and i cannot find any damage on the inside of the door, which leaves me confused... very confused. door still open closes, window goes up and down, and lock still functions, if i can get ahold of my brothers digi, i will post some pics up.

just go to any junkyard and ask them to find you a door. what color is your car anyway. it does not have to be in Illinois. Anything can be shipped from anywhere.

tell me year, model, what color and which door.

Idomnt know what you have out there in the way of yards, I frequent the local pick-n-pull for my projects, and see lots of doors out there in great shape, usually grab one loaded for 100-$150, or if you can wait a bit since it still works fine, they have 1/2 off weekend sales every 6 months or so. That was where I got all the little stuff I needed to rebuild the 240 and do the 617 conversion. Sad part was I saw a lot of well maintained looking rides out there, only landed there from broken timing chains or the like, man if only I'da known, they'd have gotten a lot more from me for the cars then the yard paid them I'm sure,lol.

Just to clarify, you pulled the inner panel off the door, looked inside the inner door and it wasn't dented in there in the inside?
Find a used door and get ready for the trial and error and error and error and error......... to get it to close properly. Mine still isn't quite right.
I see doors on ebay, and even with shipping you should be under $200 bucks. Seems like **************.com has them from time to time also......
