When you do your 0-60 test, do you use the kickdown?
I want to test my 124 against the standard (10-12 seconds 0-60). When doing this should I use the kickdown from the start or just hold the pedal against the kickdown switch? Right now, in downtown Norfolk, I am getting to 45 mph in less than 8 seconds. The local police frown on doing 60 in a 35:D . I guess I'll have to wait till I can get out of town to try the 0-60 test. If it is floored down to the switch, from a dead stop, won't it shift the same as if the switch were depressed? I thought the kickdown was just to make it downshift while at cruising speed. Or will holding the kick-down on hold it to higher RPM in each gear? Just curious:P

I'd floor it.

You don't use the kickdown switch for a 0-60 test. You start in first gear, and shift at wot.
All the kick down does is tell the trans to knock down a gear when you give it the throttle at crusing speed. Which these trans are horrible at btw, you have to freaken beat the thing to get it to drop a gear. |
When the pedal is floored (without kickdown engaged), the upshifts occur a bit earlier. About 3500 rpm in 1st, 4400 rpm 2nd gear, and about 4700 rpm in 3rd.
Kickdown provides the best acceleration results by holding onto the earlier gears longer, although power is the same. This is not so much the case I've heard, with the 617 powered cars. So yes. The kickdown switch is actually the "TRUE" WOT. |

yeah! I want to know the right way to do a 0-60!
I actually was going to post a thread!!! yay! now I dont need to.
I just did my first 0-60 today with "Zuker" (German for sugar) 0-60 in "D" was @15 sec. Is that normal for a 617.912? The issue I have is that at WOT the tranny shifts smooth- any other time it shifts hard, but seems to "pop", especially a when I slow down- i guess at kickdown? I think maybe vac. leak or vac. modulator ? I dont know- I wanted to see if it was smooth at WOT and see what the time was. I will search on this topic too, but while im at it...is my car around the right time? |
On my 300D 2.5T with the 602, it will shift close to 4000 if I floor it and don't engage the kickdown. When I engage the kickdown, every shift happens at redline. Holding down the kickdown, the engine will go to a few RPM shy of 5000, then it'll shift. On my car, leaving it in "3" will not mimic this tranny behavior. However it will redline on the 1-2 shift if it's in "2". Then when it's near redline in 2nd, pop it into "3" and you'll accomplish the same results. For 0-60 runs I leave it in "3", and hold the kickdown switch down the whole way. I should try not using the kickdown for a run (since the HP drops off a bit after around 4600 IIRC) and see what the times are. I'll have to wait until turkey day to do it, since my car is over 2500 miles away at the present time :(

Yes, use kickdown.

Two sucessful runs
at 10.2 sec. each. I guess things are running pretty good:D . At least for a 124 with 304,455 mi:eek: . I used the kick down each pass. I couldn't tell you where it shifted as I was watching my watch, the speedo and traffic all at the same time. I would need a more desolate stretch of I 64 to do that. All in all I'm happy with the performance, AFAIK that is where a 124 should run.
